I didn't realise the city I lived in was so huge I measured the distance from one end to the other and it was 5 miles short of the distance between Mogadishu and Marka (45 miles)



btw, I also compared London to another huge city (Shanghai) and London was half it's size

Well you have you have to remember London itself is several townships that were combined to form a city for example Camden town, Kentish town, Sutton etc.
London is a very old city which absorbed many smaller surrounded towns as it grew bigger.

you are forgetting density , London is denser in population than shanghai thats why it has a larger population.

gurey, the thing with these larger cities is that is is darn difficult to define the borders of the city, most mega cities just form into other smaller towns LA for e.g. is by far the largest metropolitan city in the US by size however NY population easily outnumbers it. Also most chinese mega cities do not stop (i.e. rural area between cities) they just seamlessly merge into the other city e.g. shanghai and the next few cities also the cities close to hong kong stretch for 100s of miles.

About that link, it ranks NYC as no.1 but actually the NYC metro area is relatively small compared to other larger cities. These cities are the equivalent of the space between ceeri and maydh, or hargeisa to gabiley

Cumar your post comparing london and shanghai is not fair.
I recognise the london shape as the area covered by the
London postcode area of E, N, NW, W, SW and SE which is
only 40% of Greater London.

And to be honest Greater London itself is not really a city ...just a bunch of towns which converged.
100 years ago ...only the City/Square mile was considered London ...everywhere else was Middlesex, Kent, Essex and Surrey

I mean Greater London as the area controlled by the Mayor of London

Abdikarim, the last image is of London proper not the greater metropolitan area, same for shanghai it is only the city proper.
also I checked it out and London was only the current borough of 'City of London' all the other areas were towns absorbed into it: conurbation
