Tax-free salaries, stable family life and a luxurious lifestyle are just three of the reasons why the UAE has been named one of the happiest places in the world, according to experts and residents.
7DAYS asked people what made them happy in the Emirates after a UN-commissioned report found that the country’s residents have a sunnier outlook than those in the vast majority of other countries, including the UK and the Philippines.
Scientists at New York’s Colombia University, who were asked to conduct the poll by the United Nations, found that the UAE was the 17th happiest country in the world out of a study of 156 - and most residents said they expected to still be happy in five years time.
.The average resident gave their lives a 6.9 out of 10, while 3.2 per cent even gave themselves a perfect happiness score of 10 out of 10.
Tharaka Rani Sreekumar, an independent clinical psychologist, said that a nice lifestyle and a chance to make good money were definitely helping boost national morale.
“If there is money then there is the ability to bring the family to the UAE,” she said.
“This helps to bring down stress levels and improve the standard of living. A lot of people feel secure here, which is a significant factor.”
The UAE also scored high for immediate happiness. When asked “Were you happy yesterday?” residents gave their day an average of 7.6 out of 10 points.
Asked if living in the UAE added to or took away from their overall happiness, residents gave it a five out of 10 rating, while people in war-torn Iraq gave their country one out 10 for additional happiness.
Dolly Habal, a clinical psychologist at the Abu Dhabi’s Gulf Diagnostic Centre, said she was not surprised by the report’s findings and said that good salaries and security were key factors.
Habal said that facebook, Twitter and certain internet phone services also helped many expats feel much more closely connected to their families and less isolated.

One man's happiness rests on another man's enslavement.
