The world was absolutely shocked after learning that France. Surrounder to hitler in just 6 weeks. Then ever since then they have been the butt of all the world's jokes. It simply messed up the German offensive plan. I saw Blitzkireg mentioned above, Blitzkrieg depends on oberwhelming the opponent with speed and surprise. Now if you have German soldiers wearing summer clothing and subsequently suffering frost-bite, machinary like tanks and artillery units rendered ineffective as they froze up with the fuel, whats does that leave you?

If it wasn't for Hitler's absolute arrogance Germany wouldve ultimately have won. The invasion of Russia was suppose to commence spring 1941 but hitler over ruled his military high command. Instead the idiot felt that Russia was too weak to hold on till winter. He attacked in summer 1941. At first Hitler seemed a genious bc the Russians were routed and chased quickly all the way to the doors of Mascow. Then winter came to the rescue. Germany's army were still wearing summer clothes. Half of them died of frost-bites the other half had hordes of Siberian human animals descend on them

In our russian TV news is talking about a hundred of killed terrorists and successfull engaging over Kona town, also they talk about one destroyed french chopper.

That was a horrible WAR, there was a lot of heroics, a lot of deadweight losses, tens of millions of casualities, a half of a continent was almost destroyed... French may be many things but not cowards, the nazis changed the millitary game with blitzkrieg, which was invented by the British and Russians at the same time as well as the French,
the famous charles de gaulle a junior offcier wrote about describing this new form of warfare but was ignored, so was liddel hart in the UK, and Marshal tukachevsky who pioneered it in the soviet union was shot by stalin along with other equally great generals.
The Germans were the only ones who did their homework and took the lessons and applied it, thats why they won.

Everyone else learnt it after the beating they got, and the french took this to heart and by the 60's they were the most mobile armed force in the world, leading the world in airmobile operations.

now about this particular case , i have no information so i cannot contribute much, i can only say that these kinds of operations are dangerous and unpredictable , and they go wrong quite often.
you dont hear it from americans because they are good at controlling media exposure.
and they are less likely to get captured because if they get suprised they just go wild in their cowboy behavious and get everyone killed in a 10 mile radius,
in Afghanistan Nato troops like the french and germans and british are equally frieghtened of US cowboy behaviour as much as taliban attacks and US troops have killed dozens of Nato troops including their own in " friendly fire attacks".
