Danish sperm banks eye appealing off-shore service after the UK tightens its sperm donation legislation

When Danish Vikings invaded England more than 1,000 years ago they did not only leave a trail of death and destruction. As Danes established a foothold in England in the 9th Century, many raiders settled down and became one with the local population, leaving a considerable genetic heritage.

Now, the genetic export across the North Sea can resume, albeit under somewhat more peaceful conditions.

Based on supply from Danish sperm bank Cryos, a number of sperm ships, staffed with doctors and nurses, will anchor off the British coast to offer fertility treatment forbidden to the British, including anonymous donor sperm.

Daily newspaper Politiken reported that new legal requirements in the UK, forbidding anonymous sperm donations, are feared to drastically reduce the number of men willing to donate, and thus infertile couple's chances of begetting children.

Ole Schou, Cryos' director, said he had been contacted by a number of doctors asking whether the bank was willing to supply sperm to ships that will offer insemination outside Great Britain's maritime border.

'The ships will be equipped as clinics and staffed with doctors and nurses who can supply the treatment. We have said yes to supplying the ships with sperm, as long as it happens under acceptable conditions,' Schou said.

British national broadcaster BBC reported the news had caused furore in the UK.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, which regulates and inspects all UK clinics providing fertility treatments and donor insemination, said it could not do much about the ships, as they only had to adhere to legislation in their own countries.

'Our job as the UK regulator is to provide guarantees for people in terms of the safety and the appropriateness of the treatment they are receiving,' the authority's spokesman told the BBC. 'We are not saying people should not make this choice, but you can't be sure what you are getting.'

He said there was also a question mark over who would provide after care if things went wrong.

The fertility ships would be governed by Danish law, which allows midwives to assist lesbians and single people in their quest for a baby, while forbidding fertility doctors to grant the same service.
