My uncle was a veterinary working for the Somali government and later on regime during the 70's - 80's. He told me that if he would estimate the number of elephants in Somalia during the early 60's-70's he would say approximately 30.000 from Waqooyi (Hawd, Ethiopian border) to Koonfur but that changed after 77 war. Somalis have always hunted large game but mostly with arrows or spears, in rare cases with rifles but after the 77 war, every reer miyi had a kalashnikov which totally destroyed the wild life. There were some reserves throughout Somalia but that didnt change the situation.

The last elephant in Hargaysa region was killed in 1953 an old British teacher brought his skull in the city and erected it in front of some highshcool.

In 1880's there were around 10,000 hartebest in Toyo plains according to commissioner Eric Swayn , by the 1906 the entire herd was almost exstinct. There is no elephant in all of Somalia today nor hartbest, few kudu are left and oryx .

I happen to have a copy of Mammals of Somaliland, and apparently the Somali elephant which is marked by a different size of ears to other varieties used to come right down to the sea at Berbera, and onto the Gadabursi Hills from the Golis Range.

Such a sad state of affair this loss of flora and fauna is!
