you should have seen the transformation between 96 and 99
i was away in australia and came back to visit, it wasnt much different to the 1991 picture apart from a couple of more buildings.
i came back and there over a dozen skyscrapers in just 3 friggin years.

but thats dubai by 1991 they were nearly out of oil, trade and industry and tourism fuelled its growth.

It is amazing how the black gold can transform certain countries. From the first picture a barren isolated desert to the second picture a developed first world city with
the right infrastructures. I went to UAE a couple of times in different years I saw some of the changes with my own eyes in the timeline of a few years. For example a
while back when I went to UAE and stayed in Deira Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dubai etc there was not many new cities.I came back a few years later and see an entire new
cities built from scratch next to Deira Dubai.

Yes but everything is being built for them by foreigners. From American designed malls to Korean built nuclear power stations.

A nation should be self reliant. Who cares about shiny buildings when everything is imported?

That is due to the lazy Arab work ethic and lack of technological innovations of their own. Some Arab countries have put their black gold to good
use in terms of agriculture like Saudi Arabia and Jordan by creating crop fields in the middle of the deserts to feed their people even though it is
estimated if they keep wasting the water like that the underground reservoirs might run out by 2020 and Arabia receives low rainfall apart from the
Dhofar region of Oman. They face a dilemma as the land is still the same desert their forefathers rode camels in even after all those technology
and black gold.

sorry to be rude but thats just dumb, you cannot farm in a desert and you shouldnt try,
the saudis are doing this so that they could throw away money that they have too much of.
You should industrialize and export manufactured goods and import food.

I know you're Australian but that doesn't give you a pass for ignorance !

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desalination - basic chemistry which can used with an abundance of energy !

whats worse than someone ignorant?
someone who is proud of his ignorance.

Desalination needs energy, you need allot of it for Saudia to feeds its 20 million plus you would need so much energy that its exports would be cut , losings billions.
You also need good soil, you cant just use fertilizer.
If they find imporved methods of desalination and combine it with 4rth generation nuclear power plants and ship in allot of topsoil, in a decade or 2 it can feed its people.

right now its not economical.

Gurey I wasn't talking about big scale food consumption purpose if that was the case Saudi Arabia wouldn't have bought fertile fields in southern Ethiopia but just
enough to prevent the local Bedouins of the desert and their camels starving just like Oasis farming. You should watch the documentaries called Wild Arabia
by David Attenborough.

The Arabs are too proud, and when the Oil runs out they will simply go back to herding the camels.
