In Garbahaaray the Prime Minister of Somalia with the Interior and Defense Ministers by him says:

1. Federalism is the objective of his government
2. Jubbaland State is a reality to become the government supports
3. Gedo is the foundation and final say on Jubbaland State building and existence

Puntland site calls his speech one of the most federalism respecting speeches ever given in Somalia and praises him for finally acknowledging the government finds Jubbaland State is envitable

Shabelle just says the PM is there to talk about administrations for the Jubba Valley and acknowledges for the frst time the government has grouped the three Jubba Valley regions together as a union

What's with the clamor for this federalism idea lately in Somalia? Is it something born post-91 only or was there a call for this prior? There was a Trans-Guiba in the 20s under Italian rule for a couple of years, but I don't really see the precedence for it other than some recent politicking in the last few years. I'd appreciate it if more knowledgeable forum members could shed some light on when federalism became the agreed-upon goal of Somalia and what historical basis Jubaland has.

Short version:

1. Country run by single authority from the center for long time
2. Civil war happens and hundreds of clans and subclans and subsubclans fight
3. Stalemate takes place where one single clan could not defeat all the others and unite the country
4. Since there couldn't be one single national victory they all agree not to be ruled entirely from the center
5. Federalism is agreed to where a representative government is formed but still Somali clans and regions have significant autonomy from central rule

Bring in Jubbaland

1. Has a shared history originally colonized by Britain as a united territory then gives it to Italy as a whole
2. Has similar geography...Somalia's largest river the Jubba runs right down all three modern regions (Gedo or Upper Jubba, Middle Jubba, and Lower Jubba) of historical Jubbaland hence the name "Jubba-land"
3. Has similar clan make up...the rest of southern Somalia has either Digil-Miifle or Hawiye majority but Jubbaland sees majority and political and military dominance from the Darod
4. There is a regional and national understanding Jubbaland composed of the three regions but political formation of this understanding has so far been difficult

The Govt has finally realised J/Land is unstoppable, so are trying to create a rival admin to the one being formed in Kismayo.
No single region or group has a veto over the formation of J/Land.Negotian and concessions is the name of the game.

Yohannes.....after the destruction of Mogadishu in 1991 most of the clans not native to the south returned to their northern homelands.
During the succeeding 20 years of anarchy in Mogadishu/South, they formed autonomous regional states.

Now this southern Govt wants to return to a centrally governed Somalia, however, the autonomous regions are rejecting this attempt at power grabbing.

Bullshit the leopard doesnt change its spot.

inshallah a large chunk of the defense budget will be allocated to Gedo security.

Lets just hope the Govt doesn`t try to create another rival J/Land admin to cause conflict.

The Puppet Minister Chose Kaliil as the Govonor of Gedo.
Its realy sad to see him trying to split his own kins.

He did not achieve any of the list he was given by his boss in rapecity, markaasuu leyahe gedo is the basis of Jubbaland. What a joke this loser for a pm is.

A very demeaning spectacle.
At least the people weren't fooled by him.
