My cousin came back from Mogadishu today

Post by The`Republic »

He pretty much added on to what an uncle and two brothers of mine have said and I relayed here before.

If you are Marehan, you are hot commodity in Mog. He said the other Darod are coming back to sell their properties but the Marehan are not only retaking their stuff but are rebuilding it. He said the Hawiye elite are very pro Marehan and there are many business and political opportunities for Marehan in Mogadishu.

He relayed a story one time where him and a friend were walking and gaari gacan "wheelbarrow" accidentally hit him. The wheelbarrow guy said "aryaa yaa tihiin" in case a show down took place, my cousin responded "Mareexaan"...upon saying that he said the entire market came to their aid. He said an old lady near them selling beans kept saying "aryaa maxaa kugu dhacay wiilasha waa dhal xalaal ah"

Pretty much he said wax cajiib buu soo arkay and he was overwhelmed by the graciousness, hospitality, and welcome he received everywhere in Mogadishu.

Well going back to Mogadishu and contributing to its redevelopment while neglecting the home regions is not really a good idea. I hope those same people are also investing in our regions and not making the same mistake twice. Having spoken with many Marehans who used to live in Mogadishu before the city was destroyed I don't think they have learned any lessons.

It's a bit true. My Marehan cousins have lived in Hamar and have had really good opportunities.
But I've always considered Marehans as Hawiye so it doesn't matter.

Turb, a lot are still interested in Mogadishu but I think there is also an understanding that Gedo needs to politically and militarily settle down. A lot of people have invested the last couple years to see their stuff destroyed in the Shabaab war. But he did say many of the Marehan do not see Mogadishu as a final destination, he said from Nairobi to Mogadishu there was an obsession with Kismaayo. Even the ones born in Mogadishu claim they were born in Kismaayo and he said there is a political understanding the future of their lives will be in a state including Kismaayo and Gedo.

He just really appreciated the reception he received in Mogadishu which reminded me of what my brothers said a year ago.

That is the reason everyone gives not to invest in the region and it is a reasonable one considering the reason history of Gedo. My family owns a farm in Kamatiirey just outside Kismaayo and outside of Gedo it is probably the only place we will invest in. Anyway it is good that they were received well in Mogadishu. Hawiyuhu soo dhaweynta iyo derisnimada kuma xuma. Siiba kuba reer koonfureed ah. Kuwa Sacad la yiraahdo oo majerteenka gumeystaan are an exception. Cuqdad bay qabaan kuwaas but it is to be expected.
