Madmac572 -- thank you for your post, as your recollections enhanced my own understanding of the military-political context in Mogadishu during the summer of 1993. The cause-and-effect analysis you offer is superior to that of the online dispatch in question, and certainly better than that of the (unfortunately numerous) mindlessly jingoistic comments that reject wholesale the notion that our actions as a nation have consequences, even when presented with historical evidence to the contrary (ask your average American about why we have bad relations with Iran, and you're more likely to get a absurd, Bush-esque answer along the lines of "They hate our freedom", rather than an analysis that begins with the CIA-backed coup against the democratically-elected Mossadegh...). However, I take exception the conclusions you draw at the end of your post: "1. We did not have the political courage to recognize that we were going to have to continue a very violent campaign to destroy the SNA as a military entity. 2. We did not have the political will to stay the course after one mission ended in a bloody battle." These statements make the critical and rather questionable assumption that investing more of our blood and treasure in Somalia was worthwhile, even when faced with uncertain or even dubious prospects of success, and more importantly, making that investment in an country which is and was not vital to the security of the United States. You might argue that America's security was weakened symbolically, as pulling out after one big battle and 18 dead emboldened our enemies. Yet similiar arguments were made by President Johnson and his advisors about the supposed symbolic criticality of Vietnam -- initially that the United States would prove to its allies that it was willing to spend its blood and treasure to fight the spread of communism, and later, that "cutting and running" would weaken our credibililty with both our allies and our cold war enemies. Indeed, I think it is safe to say with benefit of hindsight that we would have been far better off not engaging in so domestically divisive a war (which, by the way, fatally undercut support for universal military service), in spending the money we spent in Vietnam on modernizing our armed forces to face the Soviets, and in doing it in a country that was not geopolitically vital to the security of the United States. All I'm suggesting is that perhaps, once our political leaders realized that victory could not be gotten on the cheap in Somalia (as was once believed of Vietnam in the advisor era), "cutting and running" from Somalia was the best thing for our country and for our overall security.
"
some other person posted this
"12 years ago the colective world community reached out a hand to help the people of Somalia, and they literally bit the hand that fed them. I can't feel any sympathy. No one will lift a hand to help them for another 20 years, because fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
"

there were some sympathizers in there .....

Clearly Mad mac and the likes of him are the typical american war left overs, who are bitter for the remainder of their days, after using them and abusing them they usually just get dump.
and this is where the bitterness sets in, they become isolated from reality and withdraw into a world of bitterness and never ending internal rage.
even those lucky enough to escape the War Syndrome lose most of the things that are important to them. such as family friend and any prospect of employment
so then they usually find an obscure hobby to try and release their rage, they usually find something to hate something or someone to blame for their ruined life (usually the inhabitants of those regions where they were sent to)
its no suprise that Mad mac has become obsessed over the years with somalis, and you can clearly see the bitterness in him although he has i think improved from his early days.
as is the norm his original justification for his woes became altered and not suprisingly he started veiwed ISLAM as the co-culprit as well.

Allright you fockers, you're getting on my last nerve here.
MAD MAC is the guy who, in his last post on that site (and yeah that's me) DEFENDED you d!cks! MAD MAC was the one who explained what really happened. Read my posts for Christs sakes!
Libax you think I'm bitter? God damn right I'm bitter. Let me enlighten you a little. My year in Somalia cost me my first wife, it costs me one of my soldiers, and then, after having made a bunch of Somali friends, I had to explain to them that our government was quitting before Somalia had a functional government, so I got to be humiliated by my own government as well. Now, don't you think you'd be a little bitter if it were you?
Fock, the whole Somali operation has become so politicized by all sides, that nobody is honest about what went down there. Not you and not those on our side either. Makes me want to puke! Fock it, I'm moving to Thailand and you morons can stew in your own political quagmire. I'll send you a postcard.
