Mohamed Siad Barre-Jaalle Afweeyne
Afweeyne has been president of Somalia for 21 years, and has left a legacy, good or bad. Some call him to be responsible for the destruction of Somalia and the civil war, due to his divide and rule politics among Somalia's different Clans. They accuse him that he made sure that Somalis will never agree on leadership issues after he departs office. While others point to his rigid draconian laws and leadership and claim that Somalis could be only run by such a dictator like Afweeyne.
What were Afweeyne's legacies?

^^ so thats his legacy? Maj. Gen. M.S. Barre destroyed the city, is that you accusation
during the late great president's tenure Somalia had one of largest and best equipped armies in africa. The General fought for the liberation of our brothers in Ogaadenia and would've one the battle had not some phucks in the higher echolons of the military committed mutiny and high treason. by siding with the enemy ( we all know who those phucks are)
his civilian accomplishments: BAR AMA BARO ( which greatly improved the literacy rate of somalis)
Equality for women before the law
BACAAD CELINTII ( which is still considered a miracle of sorts)
i can go on and on and on but i know you already know all these things. and every sensible somali knows and misses such a leadership. kuwii nebcaa xataa aa maanta ku haya "ninkaas libaax buu ahaa, haduuba kuwaan hada wadanka qasaaya dadka ka haayay"
under Pres. Maj. Gen. Mohamed Siyad Barre Somalia was one but today we have shitt like "somaliland" "puntland" "jubbaland" all based on clanism and created out of neccessaty because no one wants to trust anyone
so you tell me does somalia miss the leadership of the great general or are we better off today
i think the answer is clear for everyone who cares about our future to see

The original natives of Xamar were opressed that would have never happened if Afweyne was in power; thus they created havoc on the capital; I don't blame them.
Afweyne freed Ogadenia kulaha, how many isaaqs fought for their brothers against Ethiopia, what they got in return was being attacked by Ogaden which was supplied by Afweyne government.
What kind of leader bombs his own people.

smatr what kind of people talk of seceding when things don't go their way
abti we can go on and on meesha qalad wuu dhacay and am not nor i have i ever said that the late president was a saint
but what I AM SAYING is under the situations he did his best and kept our country together for 21 loong years despite many people siding with the eternal enemy of somalia and trying to undermine the very existance of somalia
waryaa i never said " gen. siyad barre alone fought for ogaadeenia" but under his leadership a united somalia fought to free their brothers but some got blinded by clan hate and betrayed their own country just because they hated the president
lets put it this way, would you undermine "somaliland's" existance just because the president is gadabuursi and keeps on holding to power even though everyone wants him out of power
would you side with "puntland" because you hate gadabuursi
ask yourselves those questions and you'll get an idea of what those traitors did to the motherland at a time of great need
abti things are not as easy as they seem when you're looking in from the outside. there are a lot of grey areas when it comes to running a country, specially a complicated and clan-based nation like somalia
i'll be happy to further educate you later sxb hada ama go eat and hit the sack

Dictatorship is what Somalis need. Somalis need the strong hand of a strong ruler. One thing is for sure, when said bare ruled, he ruled with an iron fist and because of that, there was some sort of stability, and when he left, the country was left to bunch of bandits and they ruined what was guarded by the former ruler.
Like it or not, when Siyad ruled, the country was functioning. Yes, he killed few people here and there, but that is what happens when someone threaten the rule of a totalitarian regime.

Several days ago, I was almost decapitated for using the term "Afweyne" in regards to the late General. Some members even went so far as to insinuate it was Isaaq influence in the forum that led me to it. Not true. As I said, I gleaned it from the General's bio, and it was NOT intended as a slur. With that being said, here is the link I used for the bio. I'll leave it to those who saw with their own eyes what happened in Somalia to determine the validity of the bio, and to determine what his legacy is.

And as a sidenote, I found the fact that the man was a lawyer fascinating: "He went to Northwestern the school year following his graduation where he earned a law degree. He became the Vice Commander of Somalia's Army when the country gained independence from Italy in 1960. Barre became an advocate of Soviet style Marxist government after spending time with Soviet officers in joint training exercises in the early 1960s."

Gen. Daaauud was overthrown by Siyaad Barre as major army general
Gen. Mohammed Abshir was overthrown by Gen. Jamac Qoorsheel as major police general.
Qoorsheel and Siyaad Bare were the two Daarood men leading the 1969 coup. Leaders of Supreme Somali revolutionary council .
But then Siyad bare did the bad thing. He got rid of Qoorsheel to solidify his power.

Challenges to the Regime
The SRC announced on two occasions that it had discovered plotters in the act of initiating coup attempts. Both instances involved SRC members. In April 1970, Qoorsheel, the first vice president, was arrested and charged with treason. Qoorsheel represented the more conservative police and army elements and thus opposed the socialist orientation of the majority of SRC members. He was convicted of treason in a trial before the National Security Court and sentenced to a prison term.
In May 1971, the second vice president, Major General Mahammad Ainanche, and a fellow SRC member, Soviet-trained Lieutenant Colonel Salah Gaveire Kedie, who had served as head of the Ministry of Defense and later as secretary of state for communications, were arrested along with several other army officers for plotting Siad Barre's assassination. The conspirators, who had sought the support of clans that had lost influence in the 1969 overthrow of the democratic regime, appeared to have been motivated by personal rivalries rather than by ideology. Accused of conspiring to assassinate the president, the two key figures in the plot and another army officer were executed after a lengthy trial.
By 1974 the SRC felt sufficiently secure to release Qoorsheel and most of the leaders of the democratic regime who had been detained since the 1969 coup. Igaal and four other former ministers were excepted from the amnesty, however, and were sentenced to long prison terms. Igaal received thirty years for embezzlement and conspiracy against the state.

The question is his legacy and not his story? No need to copy and paste chunks of irrellevant info concerning politicking, the question is, what has he done for Somalia, positive and negative? Every nation has its historical figuries, and arguably Afweeyne is/was the most heavyweight of all modern Somali figuries.

His achievements are many but i will list few of them that had had an impact on Somalia's existance.
Siyaad Bare was the first president in Somalia to have recognized the importance of writing our literature in Somali , using the latin script which best suited the needs for comprehensive coverage of Somali alphabetical characters in a meaningful context.
He strove to better the equality of men and women.
He buried the disease of clannism and stipulated a severe penalty for whoever is caught favoring someone in favor of his clan. Eg. when i was really young, i was completely if all ignorant of classification of clans. They seemed insignificant to me until the break out of our tribal war that i came to its knowledge.
He built many educational institutions and prestigious ones, Lafoole. For instance, Somalia excelled in the art of math in all over the continent. We used to compete other nations in terms of highly standarized tests and academic research projects
He recognized the importance of diverse relationship amongst us. He was the first president to nominate someone from the despised clans as prime minister.
and finally he he waged a war on Ethiopia in an attempt to capture the occupied territory of Ogaden or at least force them to relinqush it.
I hope you learn from me,
Wabilaahi Towfiiq.
