Hawo Osman Tako (Somali: Xaawo Cusmaan Taako, Arabic: حواء عثمان تاكو‎) (d.1948) was a prominent early 20th century Somali nationalist.

Tako participated in the 1948 riots in Mogadishu that followed the visit of the Four-Power Commission, where she was killed.
She later became a symbol for Pan-Somalism, and her struggle was taken up by the nationalist Somali Youth League (SYL) political party. The SYL, for its part, would go on to produce numerous influential Prime Ministers and Presidents of Somalia.
In the 1970s, a monument was erected in Mogadishu in honor of Tako's sacrifice for her nation. Several schools in present-day Somalia are also named after her.

Xaawo Taako day should be an official national day. Maybe it will cross Hassan Sheikh's mind after he is done securing a future for his family with aid money.

Siyaadist Propaganda to promote heroes from one qabiil. Why were no monuments erected for Sheikh Hassan Barsane ?

Walee Waayaab; don't you guys know that Xaawo's grand kids are alive and have names, and clans and so on. Xaawo Cismaan Xaawo Taako was a real Somali woman from then Jubbada Sarre probably Baardheere/Buaale area from Bartire clan. She left behind three kids. Her honor was way before Maxamed Siyaad Barre and as a matter of fact it was Aadan Cadde who first honored her as a national hero. It was Dhagax-tuur who was not a real person but rather a symbol for the struggle.

Walee dad bey meelu bugtaa.....

Good question. Where is Sheikh Hassan statue? When the Xalane Military Institute was being named, it created drama in the SRC voting table and split them into two because some members were vehemently against associating it with Xalane, a man who dies with the Somali flag wrapped around him when fighting the Ethiopians lol...why? Your guess is as good as mine

Ridiculous indeed as there were many Hawiye famous people who were named after schools and other iconic institutions than Daarood. Just schools alone, I can remember:
1. General Dauud School
2. Xalane School
3. Cismaan Geedi Raage
4. Abdulle Raage
5. Sandhool Guure

Compare that C/raxman Mursal of Cawlyahan who fraught the British in Jubbaland and no school or any other place was named in his honor.

7. Sheekh Hasan Barsame
8. Dugsiga Sare ee Aadan Cadde

Xaawo Taako was assuredly real. Her living descendants alone prove that.

A great patriot and lady! :som:

Xaawo Taako was real. That wasn't her real name but the inspiration behind the legend was an actual lady. Don't know where she was from or what her clan affiliation was though.
