Gender specific careers

Post by InaSamaale »

Do you believe certain careers/jobs shouldn't be held by the opposite gender? Would it matter to you if someone you are considering happens to hold a certain career ? Like if a guy specialized in gynaecology or a midwife would it matter to you ladies since his job involves looking at female parts all day? Or a female civil engineer working in a male dominated industry, would you consider her as a potential spouse?

I recently met a Somali male nurse. First time he told me what he does I repeated it because I thought I had not heard correctly and he was like "is there a problem with that?" slightly defensively I was like honestly no, I'm a broke student and you're making money, hardly have a bases to be condescending.

It reminded me of a similar case though a couple years ago when I was enrolling for my course. I went with my mom and guy cousin who was also starting the same uni. After we enrolled, we had this information session introducing is to respective courses. When we sat down, I saw the room had more females than men, huge discrepancy. Didn't think too much of it. Anyways I spot this Indian guy with a turban sitting at the front. He had his back straight, brought a notebook, highlighters and the whole nine-yards. (I only bought a pen, thought we were literally only enrolling) My mom is like "MashaAllah, waxas aa arday la dahaa" and "naa, aaway buugaaga".

Anyways, finally the lecturer comes in and says "So, are we all here for the Nursing and Midwifrey double degree". We slowly make our way out and by this time my cousin and I are laughing are heads off because the guy stayed! I always picture that guy finishing his degree though and out there making money having the last laugh.

These days no such thing as gender specific career, whatever brings in the $$. I know a Somali male Obgyn that speaks Chinese. He had a clinic close to our house at Xamar, he was friends with my father. When I was told what he does for a living I was
and I remember asking isn't he disgusted by looking at women's private parts all day, everyone laughed at me..being a kid
But female working as a civil eng is though, just dealing with all the harassment etc.

I always thought Nursing was a career for females until a close Somali friend of mine convinced me it wasn't. Apparently a male nurse has it good. They are promoted fast because they don't need to take maternity leaves etc etc. He holds a managerial position and sits on a handsome above average salary because he was able to climb the ladders quick. So going beyond the traditional gender barriers associated with some careers might yield good results for some.

Yeah I've heard of a Somali male nurse in my local hospital but never came across him, I imagine him to be kind of feminine. Idk but I find it weird when males become nurses or midWIFES  . On the other hand it's perfectly okay for a female to take on a male career like engineering, but a male shouldn't take on a female career such as nursing.
