Mental Illness Week

Post by Mowhawk »

Is there any evidence in Islam, or in the Somali culture that suggests a lack of faith, or the devil is responsible for any type or form of mental illness? Or is mental illness a result of changes in the chemical makeup of the brain? Do you believe that prayers alone can fix the problem? Do you consider it to be a cultural superstitious myth making assumptions about other's health?

Please share your thoughts.

P.S

My dear LionHeart, I told you that I would research some info about mental illness. Few days ago, I caught up with and talked to an old Muslim-friend from High School days, who is a psychologist now, and works with Muslim patients. She told me that her clients are a growing number of young and old Muslims with varying degrees of mental illnesses. She said that most of them suffer from depression and Bi-polar. The latter group of people is prone to erratic mood swings ranging from severe and prolonged depression to a period of uncontrollable euphoria and activity. She concluded, while on medications which mostly works, these patients are able to lead a normal life, and their relationship with their loved ones, friends and the general community improves and becomes normal. I pray that someday soon Allah will cure you and all the others. Wink

Basra

This is a serious topic, unless you are derranged beyond repair, and one of the reasons that you making fun this is, only if you are expecting to be healed by DR Phill, (You are a Harpo addict). We all get friends or relatives who suffer from such diseases. And they seek different healing unlike yours.

Mohawk, yes there are mentally ill people resulting from chemical imbalance from the brain but then there is also those people who are not really mentally ill but are made to believe they are because immoral scientists under the payroll of giant pharmaceuticals who want to market drugs for these non-existent diseases. These drugs only fuk up with the person and they are intended to make that person dependent on them permanently.

Mental health is not something that we can relate to it, but it may have been caused by destroying the land that we call home, and the people living there and overseas is easy for them to suffer. We need Somalis to solve it and feel them. Which way are you looking at? From a western based Somali, or a Somali in Somalia? Good people suffer and die young, while bad people had the last laugh in this world, like the warlords and their supporters like Basra. Laughing

Mo,

Mental illness has stages and degrees that vary from one another, there is the one caused by chemical imbalance and could be cured by medication, and there are multitude others triggered by other factors.

Isku yaac
There is the looney who gets along with people and Somalis call (wuu waalanyahay laakiin dadka wuu la dhaqmaa)

Buufis
There is the new type of madness that became epidemic in the refugee camps in Kenya; It is a combination of paranoia and schizophrenia, caused by lack of sleep, hoplessness, malnutrition and excessive consumption of Qaat, that type gets the individual to an stage where he he is on thge lookout for perceived and imaginary enemies who are conspiring to get rid of him.

Jinnoole
There is the other craziness caused by an unseen beings, namely Jinni, Shaytaan or dabayl (depends whichever you wanna accuse) and mostly recitation of certain verses from the Qur'an will heal the person.

Rooxaan/Fiqi Buraale
These group of ppl are not crazy per se but have control of certain entities that cause mental disruption for a duration of time and they demand for certain specific items, like a (Cadar fur cagaaran leh) a half black half white she-goat, xalwo and bun iyo daango iyo timir, if not satisfied, they will strangle the bearer or eat his liver
