Somaliland´s role in potential Egyptian-Ethiopian War
Tension is increasing as Ethiopia and Egypt continue to butt heads over the Nile River. Ethiopia remains firm on building the $42 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Egypt is determined to stop Ethiopia from building the dam, claiming that Egypt is the ´gift of the Nile´ and water supply will decrease by 20% and hydroelectric power would decrease by 40%.
The battle over the Nile has already drawn neighboring countries into the dispute. Sudan and South Sudan have expressed their support for Ethiopia´s dam, while Somalia declared their allegiance to Egypt.
Earlier this month, Egyptian army officials arrived in Somalia to discuss revamping the Somalia National Army and building a possible Egyptian military base. It appears that if Egypt & Ethiopia do go to war, Egypt is relying on Somalia?s strategic location to attack Ethiopia. In order to do so, they will need to go through Somaliland first ? with the help of Somalia.
Which comes to the question: What is Somaliland?s stance on this issue and what role would they play?
The people of Somaliland will never forget the role Egypt played during the struggle years against Siad Barre?s regime. Egypt armed and supplied military hardware that was used to slaughter the people of Somaliland. After reclaiming our independence in 1991, Egypt has been using their influence in the Arab/Africa world to hinder any chance of us getting recognition.
Somaliland?s strongest ally in Africa is Ethiopia. Since reclaiming the independence we were granted in 1960, Ethiopia and Somaliland have shared an unbreakable bond. Both countries have operated on issues such as trade and security. A close relationship ? but not close enough considering the fact they have yet to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign nation.
Regardless, Somaliland remains loyal to their brothers of Ethiopia. If the two countries do go to the war we will support them through thick and thin.
The Somaliland government has made their stance on this issue clear and expressed their commitment to defend Ethiopia. That being said, we need Ethiopia to meet us half-way and take the lead of granting us our rightful recognition. It?s time we stop lying in bed with each other and make our relationship legal and official.
Ethiopia has every right to use the Nile waters to develop their nation and provide for their citizens just like other countries situated on the Nile. It?s in Egypt?s best interest to diplomatically resolve this issue with Ethiopia and reach a common solution that will benefit both countries. If Egypt insists on stirring chaos, Ethiopia can definitely count on the people of Somaliland to help them fight off any potential threat.

Ethiopia is an enemy but so is Egypt..even to this day they support the destruction of somaliland. They support Barre , given him weapons back in 80's to wipe out somalilanders, they've undermined us since we gained our independence.Timo_Case wrote:Hodan why walaalo ? Uganda has joined sudan too.
Foreing relations of Sudan was always in line with egypt before the 90s but since the al jabha al turabiya they broke away from egypt.
Sudan and ethiopia had also no historical religion problems, infact they formed one army againist the italians in eastren sudan and ethiopia... The habasha singers also sing in sudani the two people are very close.
Ethiopia had let sudan to use its land in the war againist the south sudanese but the crazy al turabi has caused big problem between the two regimes when he revealed this secret to the media.
Sudan needs ethiopia in the talks with south sudan
Lastly, ethiopia, sudan, djbouti and yemen are allies againist ertria known as tajamuc al sancaa.
egypt, qatar and eritria are allies againist ethiopia
Hassan sheekh has close relationship with qatar and there is a contract that qatar funds and egypt would supply him the weapons.
Ethiopia sees that egypt is using somalia as a proxy army.
Somalia though sounds in line with egypt will stay neutral
Arabs are contacting with the govt and will cover its financial needs not because that somalia will side with egypt but as a future ally, we can take advantage of this without involving in wars.
The govt is securing now its borders with ethiopia because its a big threat ethiopia to stay in there at this time, they could invade mogadisho from hiiraan, bay, bakool and geddo.
Ethiopia is working now to dismantale the govt through the regional states, up to now the president has secured his clan.
America supports egypt so its ok for us internationally.
As for somaliland, if they side with ethiopia, it will lead more alienation in the arab world.

Egypt is history and has no fighting power left in her. Ethiopia is our home if not then neighbour and we have to support that.
What has Egypt done for you?
They know nothing about Islam. They still lock out Palestinian refugees and sleep with Israel.
Funny how some brothers can defend Egypt simply because the ruling elite has Muslim in its tag.
No one is more of an enemy to SL than Egypt. Ethiopia is going to crash ONLF, Eritrea, Mogadishu's Salafist and after that they going to come to Hargeisa to take Hirsi Gaab and the other salafists with them hehehehehe.
Meanwhile Egypt will be still in Tahrir sq. talking about fuul, Israel and the Nile.

more alienation is impossible, right now arabs are 100% anti-somaliland and will never change their minds.sahal80 wrote:As for somaliland, if they side with ethiopia, it will lead more alienation in the arab world.
its the other way, arabs have alienated somaliland, the part of ex somalia that has the highest population of arab speakers.

Siilland will support Ethiopia. Infact they also support Israel in the hope of getting ictiraaf from them, they think: well since this is arab-jew problem, and since arabs are hostile to our ictiraaf dream we suport the jews because after all we are semitic brothers from the same forefather.
So the Siillanders will use same thinking with egypt-ethiopia: well listen ethiopia has 50% muslim population so u cant say we are gaaloraac if we support them against the egyptians. Egyptians hate us, Ethiopia love us. Also Ethiopians are semitic people just like us. Our choice is made!
Right now the allies of Ethiopia are:
Siillanders
Doqonkii Cagdheer
Qaainul wadan Punanis
