A suicide bomber and several gunmen attacked a United Nations compound in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, police and witnesses said, in a strike that bore the hallmarks of al Qaeda-linked militants.

The bomber set off his explosives outside the gate of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) base before attackers ran inside and opened fire on security guards, a senior police official told Reuters.

Gunfire could still be heard more than 30 minutes after the initial explosion. It was not immediately clear whether any U.N. officials were caught up in the gun battle or whether anyone was killed or wounded.

U.N. agencies have only recently started building up their offices and international staff inside Somalia after a period of relative improvements in security.

African Union forces and government troops drove Islamist al Shabaab rebels out of the coastal capital almost two years ago, but the militants have kept up guerrilla-style attacks from rural bases.

I have lost count how many deadly militant attacks occurred in Mogadishu under his short reign. That is what happens when you have a donkey for a

Thanks Titanium for finally seeing this man is not the solution for Somalia. Just look at the people around him. If the motherfocker Alshababs can get into heavily guarded compounds like the UNDP, what do you think other places? He spent so much time on Kismaayo forgetting the pressing national issues.

Hiiraan is out, Sh/Dhexe is on fire, Sh/hoose same thing, Puntland is gone, Jubbaland same thing, Xamar is on fire; for almost a year in power and over 30,000 well-equipped AMSIOM troops on his side, what has he done?

First thing first: get rid of all his advisers, fire minister of defense, interior and all the police and national security chefs. They have failed Somalia big time.

exactly it hasn't even been 1 year yet, also we have to remember this president came into office with alot of problems to be dealt with, the country has never been this much divided; on one hand he has to deal with reer puqland qaaskood, on another hand you have the juballand issue where original decendants of that region are being complete ignored to have there say on what goes around there region (he has to solve that), and also the continuous ashaydhaan qaas... this dude has too much on his plate......
