From Bari To Mudug The Majority Have Spoken: Faroole Must Go

Two pickup trucks transporting ballot boxes for Puntland region's municipal elections, first such in the history of Puntland, were attacked by armed men in Qardho on Sunday morning. The armed men have managed to ambush and confiscate one truck while one has managed to escape. The latest reports indicate they are hiding in the central police station where they are surrounded by heavily armed men. Local media has reported that the government has sent further military from Bosasso and Garowe to crash the rebellion.

At least five have been reported killed including three policemen.

Tensions are said to be palpable in the town as authority braces for further clashes. Transport and business has came to a complete halt.

In similar development, armed men in Somalia's central town of Galkayo have managed to loot the ballot boxes and have completely destroyed them. They burnt boxes, papers and other materials but until now no one is harmed.

Abdirahman Farole, the leader of the region faces growing opposition and morality is at all time low in Puntland. He faces deep hostility particularly in Qardho and Somalia's central town of Galkayo.

Meanwhile Somaliland has warned Puntland region against trespassing into territory. It promised to heavily deal with any effort by Garowe to conduct the vote in its region. Somaliland already confiscated ballot boxes for Dhahar, Badhan and Las Qorey.

The fresh clashes come a day after the United Nations Special Representative to Somalia and head of the UN Assistance Mission (UNSOM) Ambassador Nicholas Kay visited the region. Mr. Kay held talks with Farole on wide range of issues including the local council elections, security and the federal constitution.

The question that needs to be asked is: Why are some against municipal level elections? Is it an issue with the process itself or a concern that their localities will not be represented fairly? Farole did the right thing by postponing the election. There is definetly a need for dialogue and mutual understanding of what the process shoudld entail. Muncipal level elections will empower and allow local residents to priortize their needs and how they develop.

This focus on personalites is nothing more than emotional drivel and an instrument for rallying the masses and influenceing opinion one way or other. It does not solve fundamental process related issues. The system needs fixing. That has to be understood.
