Free and Fair election in Gaalkacyo?
This preposterous and ill-conceived notion of affecting a fair and free election in Puntland in general and Gaalkacyo in particular has never stood a chance, has it?. The Puntlander leadership may have been motivated by one of two things in my opinion to embark on this near impossible course: First is a genetic predisposition to mimic everything that their somewhat more civilized next door neighbor, the Self declared Republic of Somaliland does. Somaliland has organized a serious of relatively successful election over the last few years, so we Puntlanders must not only do the same but do it better. Second reason may have something to do with securing more funding from the ever-gullible Western government and NGOs in pretending to bring democracy in the most cursed region of Somalia. Let us face it, Puntland is not Somaliland. Somaliland populace is culturally light years more advanced than those in Puntland who seemingly have been on evolutionary stand-still for millions of years and are forever stuck somewhere between ape and Homo erectus.

Somaliland got lucky with the leaders it had. Egal AUN was somewhat of a unifying figure whose history went back to pre-indepedence days, and Dahir Riyaale Kahin being a non Isaaq showed the leadership of SL was open to all. The opposition also put unity before ambition, remember when Siilanyo lost the 04 election by a mere 80 votes, a hell could've broke loose but he waited and it paid off in 2010. MJs have alienated fellow Hartis who have left and made their own states (maakhir & Khaatumo) and it seems Puntland has descended into an MJ free-for-all with Faroole viewing himself more as a king than president with guys like Samatar and Cadde Muuse baiting him and causing mayhem. Somaliland also had cancelled elections so it wasn't always rosy, look a their last one.
