Puntland knows how to deal with terrorists the proper way

A Puntland military court Wednesday (July 17th) sentenced six men to death over the assassination of popular cleric Abdulkadir Nur Farah and other killings and bombings in Garowe between 2010 and 2012.

Abdirahman Hussein Jama Bille and Abdullahi Osman Ahmed Aynte were arrested shortly after Farah's death. The four other men escaped capture and were convicted in absentia. They are being actively pursued by the military.

Puntland military court prosecutor Abdikarin Hassan Firdiye said the six men were also involved in the killing of former senior police official Abdillahi Hussein Dhaqane, military official Abdikadir Farah Shire Boss, lawmaker Abdisalan Sheikh Mohamud Sheybe and three other men named Abdillahi Salah Ali, Hirsi Jama Dhengad and Moalim Yusuf Ahmed. The six were also behind an explosion targeting the parliament speaker in 2010 and an attack on Radio Daljir, Firdiye said.

Also on Wednesday, the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project called on Puntland authorities to investigate the death of prominent human rights activist Abdi Farah Dhere.

Dhere, deputy chairman of the Peace and Human Rights Network and head of its branch office in Bosaso, was killed by unidentified gunmen after leaving a mosque in Galkayo on July 13th.

"We are shocked and saddened to learn of Mr. Dhere's killing," said the project's Executive Director Hassan Shire. "Authorities at all levels -- local, regional and federal -- must take responsibility for ending the scourge of attacks on human rights defenders in Somalia."
