Papaya. Exotic, doesn't have any stereotypes and is representative of the Indian ocean.

South - Banana
North - Watermelon/Xabxaab

Since I am technically a northerner, I am voting Xabxaab. Banana is for monkeys.

The biggest fruits in the north are (in terms of production and availabilities which also means more consumption) are:

1) Xabxaab

2) Oranges - Liin

3) Saytuun aka Guava

Here are pictures from fruit markets in Hargeisa. Do you see any banana?

There are more watermelons in Hargeisa than people

Most fruits not grown at home is imported from Ethiopia including bananas. Somaliland imports almost zero from the south.

Northerners never saw papaya until they came the south. They are always upset and b.tching because they are constipated. Fiber is important !

Abdiwahab,

You got it all twisted. Papaya grows in any place in the Horn of Africa. Most fruits in the south were introduced there in the 19th century by your Italian masters before that you guys used to eat worms and Cambuulo (Bantu food).

Today most of Somaliland's fruits comes from Ethiopia including bananas.

Hawdian,

You are clueless. My friends in hargeisa are weeping about the lack of Bananas from Hiiraan. Getting fruits and veggies in Hargeisa is too expensive for the typical Qawdhan and so eating a banana is a special occasion: birthdays, Eid etc.

Do you have no shame? Seriously? If you're going to insult us don't lie in the process.

Not true and bananas don't grow in Hiiraan. Also why are you debating about this? It's not like your little one suburb Baraaxleey (Galmudug) grows anything.

The bananas grow in the Jubboyin and that's now under the control of Ogadens.

Fruits like apples, mango and even Papaya are quiet expensive in Hargeisa. I know this because I bought them and like I already said the over supplied ones are watermelon, oranges and guava...

The apples, papaya and bananas in Hargeisa come from Ethiopia and I know this because I tried to import it myself from Ethiopia and after doing my research learned it was already covered. I thought of this when I saw the shortages of these fruits apples, mangoes, papaya (does grow locally but not farmed yet commercially and also its limited to certain season where as Ethiopia has very diverse climate, one region could grow it today next region tomorrow...).

Nothing comes from the south except low quality small green bananas for Burco and Las Anood markets. Ethiopia has taken over sxb.

The main vegetables and fruits produced in Somaliland are: tomatoes, onions, peppers, cabbages, watermelons, oranges, papayas, and lemons. - United Nations Development Programme.
