Just witnessed something so sad it shook me to my core

Post by MenaceToSociety »

I came to visit our main house where mom and grandma reside. My grandma is here for medical check up, we sent her back but now she here for medical reasons.

This is the sad part. My nephew Elyas (age 8 ) is here. He has been seeing her for the past month. He calls her Ayeeyo 2. So today he comes running to her room with a bottle of water. She is asking him "what is it ayeeyo " and he is repeating to her "it's a bottle of water". I hear this conversation and listened it from the door. She wants to know and he keeps repeating what it is. Then I open the door to intervene. My grandma is like " maxuu ii keenay" and I said "ayeeyo biyuu ku keenay" and she like " everytime he is in this house he brings me a bottle of water". And then he goes " ayeeyo 2 I love you" and she goes " maxuu yiri" and I said " ayeeyo waxuu yiri wan ku jeclahay" and she grabs him and starts telling him stories but forgetting that he doesn't understand her. He just stared at me hoping I can translate but I just walked away.

Somali language in the North America will become extinct in one or two generations. I've started to say "Haa iyo Mayaa" to my own granny to speed up that process
