On March 11, 2002, a fire at a girls' school in Mecca, Saudi Arabia killed fifteen people, all young girls. The event was especially notable due to complaints that Saudi Arabia's "religious police" (aka the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice) stopped schoolgirls from leaving the burning building and hindered rescue workers because the girls were not wearing correct Islamic dress. As Hanny Megally, Executive Director of the Middle East and North Africa division of Human Rights Watch put it, "Women and girls may have died unnecessarily because of extreme interpretations of the Islamic dress code. State authorities with direct and indirect responsibility for this tragedy must be held accountable.
According to at least two reports, members of the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), also known as Mutaween, would not allow the girls to escape or to be saved from the fire because they were "not properly covered", and the mutaween did not want physical contact to take place between the girls and the civil defense forces for fear of sexual enticement, and variously that the girls were locked in by the police, or forced back into the building.

Me and my friend were making jokes about the Mutaween because another friend of my got in trouble in Saudi for wearing jeans that looked too tight and we were saying what if they arrest flies and cats for not covering up properly. I said I wanted to get a job with them so I can arrest 1000 in a single day and I went on their wikipedia because I thought it would be funny to see what they get up to, turns out you can volenteer to work for them so we made jokes about how we would sign up then after I saw the bit about their criticism on their wiki by international human rights organization and I saw what they done, looked into it but I wasn't going to post an entire article here so instead I posted from the wiki page... hmmmArabman wrote:But it's suspicious that you randomly picked up a story +10 years old.
