I heard a woman older than me by ten years or more read af Somaali. Listening to the struggle was :sadcam:

I think I used to be like that back in the day until I started forcing myself to read what some of you write in af Somaali. Marka aad iyo aad ayaad ugu mahadsantihiin, qoraalka af Somaaliga aad igu qasabteen in aan aqriyo. Hadda sac sac camal af Somaaliga ma u aqriyi (that might not be a word but Rome and buildings...)

When writing I do it in af ad adeeg nowadays, and now when I speak I've started to sound like that too. Vocab is the one that shames, that and not knowing any mah mah apart from nin is faanshey, people start thinking there's something wrong with you if you are always talking about is nuugid.

Sometimes I wonder what my Somali would have been like, had I not been taught by my mum at home every day after school.

Jasmine, I noticed one thing; somali parents in Anglo saxon countries tend to think that the English language is superior to the somali. They will encourage their kids to speak English. They themselves frequently use English words even when speaking with people back home in Africa.

In Northern Europe- mainly the Nordic countries- the school curricula contains classes in somali language.

Just an observation.
