The NFL and MLB may be the most popular to watch and have a bigger fan base but basketball (along with soccer) is the sport of the average man to play.

There are basketball courts in every single neighborhood. All you need is a basketball to play the sport and many people can play, poor or rich, can play it. There aren't as much baseball diamonds and football fields with field goals in neighborhoods. On top of that, you need baseball and football equipment. This is expensive.
