Because they got their base education from Kenya. Most somalis are stuck in ESL and lower level courses because not only do they not speak the language but they are also missing the sciences, maths, histories..eveyrthing.

That could be it but many people come here without speaking a word of english and still end graduating with AP courses and going to top universities. Is it because most somali parents from Somalia don't push their kids as much as the sijui parents? I know one girl who was brought to america when she was only 4 and she graduated in fukkin ESL. What kind of excuse does she have for being in ESL for that long?

Qansa--I know several somalis who went to middle and elementary school here and ended up in ESL at one of hte community colleges. Most somalis from somalia lack the drive and ambition while the sijuis really understand the meaning of education. Remember they are from kenya where education is mandatory ( i think) at least on the urban population and they have much higher literacy rates.

Qansa, I came to the conclusion that Kenyan Somalis are a lot more ambitious and hard working than the rest of us. The handful I know are all well educated and hold challenging careers. We should definately learn from them.

In general, high schools and undergrad schools in Africa and the Middle East are waaaaaaay better than that of North American, they are a lot tougher and that's why people who've had some kind of education in those countries are quite good, because they've had high schools that are harder then the 1st year university level math or science.
