Amhara's, Oromo's and Somali's

Post by BuuloXubeey »

I always see Somalis females more good-looking than Amhara females. Though Amhara females tend to have more light-skinned females than Somali females. I do not consider light-skinned as complete beauty. One thing I dislike about Amhara females is their hair. Whereas Somali females have very beautiful hair

But I personally believe we look more like Amhara's than Oromos. Yes, Oromo share similar genetics us but I totally see as have more in common with Amhara both physically and characteristically. Now lets not look down on Amhara cause they used to be our arch-enemies and we always used to compete with each other. Lets be honest, Amhara are business savy likes Somalis, they are arrogant like Somalis, they do not suffer from inferiority-complex likes Somalis and they are noble and prestige beings like Somalis.

Whereas Oromos are like the opposite. I'm not hating on Oromos but they are working-class race of East Africa. Give me famous Oromo's in the world, give me Oromo business around the world.

What do you guys think? Are we more in common with Amhara's or Oromos?

Yeah u guys might be right...to be honest Oromo do look like us alot and are majority Muslims like us, lets not deny that. But we all have our differences just like we have similarities and differences between Amhara. All in all all East African ethnic groups primarily, Oromos, Somalis, Tigray, Amhara and some Afars share unique similarities. Just like Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean share unique similarities. The world is amazing

You are very wrong but I don't blame you because the whole Somali society thinks they know things when they don't know a thing about it. It is in their nature to claim to be experts of all and everything.

The Somali understanding or what they think they understand about Oromo is completely wrong. Oromo are not like Somalis where we are all the same and we have slight dialogue and accent difference and dozens of major clans and hundreds of sub-clans. Oromo is completely different. If you can understand Oromo, you have just graduated the highest university in Ethiopia. Congratulations!

Somalis used to have contacts with people such as Jarso, Gurgura and few other long lost Dir clans and they think thats Oromo. These people are long lost Dir clans and to this day some claim to be Somali while others claim to the modern day invented "Oromo" ancestry. They claim they are part of Afraan Qallo. Having lived in Diredawa, I know how confusing this is. I had many friends who were Jarso and some claimed Somali and spoke Somali fully and others claimed Oromo and spoke their own Oromo language. Oromo from Shewa and even Bale would have hard time understanding them.

Then we have the Arsi Oromo and the Qallu and again Somalis think all Oromo must be like those two but little do they know how different Oromos are from every district and village.

In reality there is no such thing as proper definition/identification of "Amhara" or "Oromo".

The Oromo and the Amhara are pretty much one and the same thing in many ways. It is like saying George Bush is Saxon and others arguing no he is Angles.

Many of Ethiopia's great leaders are today identified as "Oromo" including Emperor Haile Selassie, Emperor Iyasu V, Mikael Ali (King of Wollo), Makonnen Wolde Mikael, Balcha Aba Nefso and many many others including Emperor Menelik.

The "Oromo", "Amhara" and Gurage are three assimilated groups and it was only recently in the 19th century that groups from the east began labeling itself as Oromo. Before that many of these groups were simply referred to as Galla.

In short, just because you saw some light skin girls speaking Amhara doesn't mean they are Amhara...God knows what their true background is. They could be Wollo Oromo.

The modern Ethiopia was ruled by Shewa groups and these groups were often identified as Oromo speaking Amhara language with Amhara culture and Amhara religion and thus were identified as Amhara. They include mainly the Raya Oromo and the Yejju Oromo. One man summed up:
In terms of descent, the group that became politically dominant in Shewa – and Subsequently in Ethiopia – was a mixture of Amhara and Oromo; in terms of language, religion and cultural practices, it was Amhara.
There is no such thing as a true Oromo. All the leaders of Ethiopia often history denoted as Amhara were Oromo Shewa (Wollo Oromo). It was only when they took the rule in the House of Solomons that the Tigray/Tambien (historical rulers of Habesha/Abyssinia including Eritrea with capital Aksum) lost power and influence because now this new Shewa group was making huge progress and all of a sudden the little known "Amhara" language had millions of speakers.

The Tigreans are different and like us Somalis, they did not assimilate into those groups.

Amhara is Oromo and Oromo is Amhara sxb. Its like saying America ayan uu kala saraya Angles iyo Saxon. Good luck.

Finally genetically we are close to the Afraan Qallo because we have Dir clans carrying our genes that assimilated into them such as the Jarso and Gurgura but can Somalis share genetics with Wollo Oromo from Shewa or even the Worji Oromo? The answer is no way.

Oromos and Somalis are from the same chute, and anybody who has met both can tell. I saw many of both in Minneapolis and hte Oromo ones could easily pass for Somali and vice versa with Me. With Tigray/Amhara thats not the case at all and I can easily tell.

Hawdian,

I'm not pretending to know everything. I was just curious and stating my opinion. I see your lengthy discussion regarding this topic. Seems interesting your sources and opinion. But one thing I just realised from my own research, there are two types of Amhara's. Don't know their differences. But I somehow disagree with your analogy of Amhara and Oromo being the same or having heavy assimilation. With Oromo being the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia there is no secret their presence of Ethiopian history but their history has no verification of being noble and elites in Ethiopia.

Even Somalis themselves have differences within themselves, excluding the Bantus and Barwaanis though Barwaanis have Somali blood in them. Ethnic groups are complex.

Murax,

Even if Oromos and Somalis come from the same chute, we also possibly come from the same 'chute' as Amharas and Tigrays. I believe all East African ethnic groups come from one direct lineage but has split apart through time. I don't believe in this bulshit where some Somalis come from an 'Arab' migrant. Yes we have some Arab blood in us, but then again just like how people intermix today, they used to intermix back then too. Seeing that Arabs and East Africans are geogprahically close to each other why not intermix? But the arab blood in us is very very little and cannot verify our distinct looks from other Africans. We are old race of Africa

The original elites of Abyssinia were the Tigrean which included what's now Eritreans. The Eritreans are more Habesha than Oromo and even some Amhara.

The Amhara is like the Oromo and quiet complex people but the main difference are the Shewans and the Gondaris. The Shewans are mixed or assimilated with Wollo Oromo and these crossbreed became the elites of House of Solomons.

The only Oromo we share blood are the once we share border and that's because we mixed with them. No other reason.

Many Oromo are also confused and believe they are originally from Madagascar because the elite Shewans convinced them that. For instance the Abyssinian court historian, Alaqa Taye (1955), alleged that in the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries the Oromo migrated from Asia and Madagascar, entered Africa via Mombasa and spread north and eastwards.

They are considered aliens in Ethiopia even by their own the Wollo Oromo, the most powerful Oromo. They all label each others as Abyssinian, Rayya, Azebu and Galla, a common ethnic slur usually directed at Oromo who did not assimilate with the Abyssinians.

That is quite interesting. But in history books, Oromos are described as low class race compared to other East African race. Don't forget Oromo's used to be captured as slaves by Somalis, Arabs and even Amhara's. Axum Empire was always known as the Amharic empire, Abyssinia was also considered as an Amharic hemisphere. Even during the battle between Abyssinia and the Somalis alongside the Arabs and Ottomans the Oromos were the ones whom has afterwards attacked the city of Harar. I have met few Oromos in Nairobi this summer, and they look so Jareer. Specially their hair, and they have like weird skin, like it is thick not smooth like Somalis. Oromos remind me of some of the Digil and Mirifle clan members. Don't get me wrong Digil and Mirifle are diverse looking people, forget about the Bantu assimilated DM but the Somali looking ones. The pastoral DM looks like a normal Somali whereas the city dwellers and farmers of DM look like Oromo.

Oromos tend to be between brown to dark-skinned it is hard to find a golden skinned Oromo, they have jareer hair. They do have somewhat similar facial features as Somalis but their aren't sharp like theirs. We have more narrow nose, and defined facial features.

Afars look more like Somali Cisse tribe.

Eritreans look more like mixed race with nappy hair.

Tigray look in between Amharic and Eritrean.

Amharas look like Somalis but bit shorter and more butch, and they tend to have more light-skinned.

All in all Somalis have the most well-defined facial features and more taller. It looks like we are the eldest of the cushtic race or the purest form.

Somalis and oromos share common similairities, although appearance wise, we don't look a like. What matters to me the most is that we share a common language structure, and above all majority of them are muslim.

Lool at Oromos and Somalis having something in common
Y'all obviously haven't seen Oromokind

Oromo-speaking Somalis such as Akisho, Jaarso, Barsuug and Gurgure
have the most in common with Somalis, followed by the eastern oromo.

Other oromos (the majority) are completely different in culture and religion.
Amhara and most Oromo are basically the same thing

Tell us more about the Oromo's in Somaliland. I know there are many in Hargeisa doing menial work. How do they look like, can you tell they aren't Somalis? The only time I come across an Oromo was two times. One in the UK and a group of them in Nairobi.

I've been around them enough and dated some to know how they are, in my opinion, I have no problem, having common similarities with Oromos than a raw eater, than again its the amhara blood in some, that revokes the thought of Somalis and oromos having common similairities, Who'd figure blood is thicker than water. :smugruss:
