Let's not have it hijacked indeed. The Chileans fought off a US backed fascist regime.AbdiJohnson wrote:40 years ago today, a coup headed by Augusto Pinochet toppled the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende, staying in power in Chile til 1990 after being ousted himself in a referendum 2 years earlier

Re: September 11 anniversary
Bashar Al Assad was born on 9/11/1965
I was in 7th grade that day. Got the announcement to go to the cafeteria since there was something going on. They said it was time for early dismissal and everyone cheered and was dapping each other up. Then, the head of security, Mr. Young, shouts at us. He says "SHUT UP! SHUT UP! YOU IDIOTS! PEOPLE ARE DYING WHILE YOU'RE CLAPPING AND CHEERING! SHUT UP!"
They didn't have any TVs on in that room so some people went to class rooms to put on the news. I remember I just ran the mile and half back home, I got back at like 11:30 AM and I saw my parents and my ayeeyo sitting in the kitchen watching TV. That's when I first saw the towers being hit and then Pentagon.

Living in Washington we are three hours behind everyone, so when the first plane hit it was like 6 am for us. I remember going to school, and there was this weird atmosphere in the air. I remember in particular my 6th grade Language Arts teacher Mrs. Colins having this very anxious look on her face, as if something bad happened to her and she didn't know whether to share it with us, the school didn't make an announcement, and she didn't know what to do, she tried to continue as normal. Then I went to my next period class which was next door, World History with Mr Harris, stout man with a bushy brown mustache to hide his missing upper lip, he told us there wasn't going to be a lesson today and that something bad happened. He didn't explain it well and I didn't understand much. All I got from school was that something had happened, and so as soon as I got home, I went and turned on CNN and watched it with my best friend. We had no real understanding what it all meant.
Then that same night the younger kids from our neighborhood went out and stood by the road with candles, I stood with them with a candle for like an hour. I remember my white neighbor who was always fond of me, whose kids I was friends with, asked me the next day if I stood with them and I told her I did, and she had this look on her face I don't think I will ever forget. It was a look of acceptance, "your one of us and you share our pain" type of look. It's probably why I've never felt out of place, or non-American, for my ethnicity or religion, if you share in their grief then you are one of them.

I was in 7th grade too...or 8th. I saw it on the news before school. The funny thing is, at that time...I never understood what was going on, two planes hitting two skyscrapers were an interesting watch on TV but I never for a second would have imagined what I was viewing would create a global shit storm and change all of our lives forever.

Re: September 11 anniversary
The next day we didn't have school since the Pentagon was hit and the entire DC Area was under alert. But that Thursday, hooyo dropped me off and school and told me to defend myself cause she was sure that some kids would try to attack any kid who was Muslim or 'looked it'.
