Somaliland

HARGEISA, 3 October 2011 (IRIN) - A humanitarian delegation from the Republic of Somaliland donated relief aid for 9,000 drought-displaced families in the
Somali capital, Mogadishu, during a recent visit, the first such visit since the region declared unilateral independence from the rest of the country in 1991.

"We plan to distribute food for 9,000 families and medicine for four hospitals," Hasan Abdi Awed, chairman of Somaliland's Chamber of Commerce and leader
of the eight-member delegation, said on 30 September. "The food we are distributing will last the beneficiary families for one month."

Awed said the Somaliland government had announced in late August that it would participate in the international efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Somalia,
which has been hit by famine and drought across most of its south-central regions.

Mohamed Shugri Jama, a spokesman for the delegation, told a news conference in Hargeisa before the visit: "We collected about US$700,000 donated by the
people and the government of Somaliland, and we have split into two delegations, one will be in Mogadishu distributing the food aid there, while another will go
to the refugee camps [in Dadaab] in Kenya."

Receiving the Somaliland delegation at the Mogadishu international airport, the governor and mayor of Mogadishu, Mohamed Ahmed Nur Tarsan, said:
"We are glad to receive the delegation from Somaliland, which is here in response to the humanitarian crisis. It is not the amount of their contribution that
matters but their empathy is more important."

Somaliland, in the north of the country, is a former British protectorate that joined Italian Somaliland to form the Republic of Somalia in 1960. In 1991, the
northwestern region declared its independence from the rest of Somalia and has enjoyed relative stability and peace unknown in Mogadishu.

South Africa

SA aid to Somalia exceeds R20m( $202,562).

SA aid to Somalia exceeds R20m

Cape Town - Although difficult to quantify, South Africa's contribution to relief efforts in Somalia exceeds R20m so far, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said Wednesday.

Replying to questions in the National Assembly, he said government had responded to the humanitarian crisis confronting Somalia by raising R8m towards the
famine relief programme, R4m of which was donated to the Gift of the Givers towards transportation and logistical costs of delivering aid to Somalia.

Furthermore, and in line with South Africa's foreign policy objective of consolidating the African agenda, government in partnership with Brand South Africa had
teamed up with the Gift of the Givers and launched the Somalia Relief Campaign to raise public awareness of the dire situation in Somalia.

Because hundreds of thousands of southerners were starving. It was our humanitarian duty like other countries to donate.

How is it a misplaced priority when it helped 9,000 Southern families in Mogadishu and dozens in Dadaab? Be grateful like Tarzan your mayor said.

Since Somaliland is part of Somalia I shall say Turkey but then again never underestimate behind the scenes Iran the sole reason why Turkey was sent by NATO to Somalia :o

Other countries that donated are Kazakhstan - $500,000 and Bahrain, among many others.

Bahrain Donates $3 Million of Humanitarian Aid to Somalia, Continues Efforts with Day-Long Donation Campaign

MANAMA, Bahrain, Aug. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bahrain yesterday approved a $3 million donation in emergency aid for famine-stricken
Somalia and will continue donation efforts with a day-long telethon airing tomorrow.
"The idea is to generate as much as we can for the people of Somalia, who are facing one of the worst humanitarian crises," said a Bahrain Radio and
Television Corporation spokesman. Tomorrow's campaign, led by the Information Affairs Authority, will broadcast documentaries on the plight of the Somali
people and will feature popular culture, art, entertainment and sports personalities to encourage participation and giving.
"People from all walks of life in the kingdom will be invited to take part in a marathon discussion, during which callers will be invited to pledge donations in
cash or kind," he said. Donations from Bahraini citizens will be in addition to the $3 million already donated by the government.
"We are confident the people of Bahrain will donate generously during Ramadan, the month of giving. While we are mostly looking at cash donations, those in
kind will also be accepted," the spokesman said. Tomorrow's telethon will air on Bahrain TV from 2pm to 6pm and 9pm to midnight.
