“Doing anything that could potentially taint your reputation, whether it be something as simple as dating or moving out of the house, sometimes seems not even worth it,” says Lena (not her real name), a 26-year-old in Brooklyn. “Yes you can be a visionary or trailblazer and try to reconcile Muslim traditions with Western culture. But at what cost? Girls with their own apartments and jobs want to get married too.”
“You grow up these very conservative households and you’re told from birth on, ‘You’re not allowed to date, you’re not allowed to date, you’re not allowed to date,’” says Aizzah Fatima, an playwright whose one-woman show Dirty Paki Lingerie tackled the stereotype of Muslim women in America. “Now you’re like 23 or 24, and your parents are like, ‘Hey, what’s wrong with you? Why can’t you find a guy?’”

I’m told that these conferences have become so popular (and so sexually charged) because it’s like a Spring Break for Muslims. There’s a sea of new of faces, the majority of which you’ll never see again. The pressure is on to find someone now, amplified by the bleak dating scene back home. When you’re Muslim, you can’t just go to a different bar every night.

This is so fascinating. :lupe:

That's interesting. I can certainly identify - there's pressure to marry yet we are expected not to date. Dating is not my thing but still, it's difficult to meet Muslims for some of us in the West in general to make friends with, let alone finding one's spouse. Some Muslims I know do look for love at national Muslim conferences. As for me, I'm not ready for that sort of thing but it is a bit strange when your friends are getting engaged.

Tinder, potentially called iSlam and specifically for hooking up? That’s up to the next generation of Muslim-Americans.

This article deals more with the Pakistani American perspective.

Plus, if you've ever been to ISNA, then you know what Club ISNA is all about.

Bengali girl I know wants to make an investigative documentary on this issue.

The 50th annual ISNA convention was held two weeks ago here and it was also held here last year.

In a nutshell, guys are hollering at girls and they do it at the convention center or in the hotel lobby. People exchange numbers, they hang out, etc over the course of the weekend. And yeah, people mess about in their hotels as well. One Pakistani dude told me a story of a girl who got pregnant around the time of ISNA.

Anyway, thats just some of what happens. And this is normally Desis as ISNA has mostly brown folk about.

I can totally resonate with you on this. Most of my friends are married with children already. Me and a few other Somali girls are an anomaly. We're finishing up undergrad without being engaged or having prospects in line. I'm actually not very open to dating. I'm a homebody. An introvert. I would like to get married around 30. I think 8 years is enough time for me to be selfish and perfect my craft.

Walking onto an entire floor to find folks in questionable circumstances.

Nope, staying clear from these "conferences".

Dating is pointless. It's all fake anyway.
