Why do many Somalis get meaningless degrees?

A miniscule percentage of the Somali population make it to university in the first place. When most of them do make it there, they pursue meaningless degrees that offer no reward after they graduate. I think they go after the easiest major they can find, I honestly don't know.

generally these degrees are most favored by skinnies aka somalis:

1. Management/ Economics degree
2. bachelor of social works
3. Bachelor of Nursing
4. Bachelor of political scientist
5. Bachelor of Arts
6. Bachelor of IT
7. Bachelor of early children education

How is Psychology a useless degree? Lots of job prospects nowadays that most general clinics employ a psychologist. Great demand for it, even more so among our community. I don't know about your ends but it takes like a good five years to become a registered psychologist and I am yet to come across a Somali one.

Because Somali parents think if one doesn't reach university, he/she is a failure. So a lot of youngsters just go to university with the intention of fulfilling their parents dream of them going to uni and to give them the right to say "haa hebel jaamacad buu dhigtaa" infront of other odayaal/islaamo.

Other than some of my uncles, I've never heard of Somalis pursuing a degree in engineering. I'm sure there are some but the amount must be miniscule. I've only seen a handful of Somali doctors. Where are the intellectuals? Don't tell me about some qabiil historian that is called professor or doctor by his mates and family.

Depending on what stream of psych you specialize in, you can make a lot of money. Problem with psych is is that it's a very popular degree and there's a large number of graduates from that discipline each year. Plus, to become a psychologist, you gotta do your PhD. Ain't nobody got time for that.

A practical education is always a plus but if you have the luxury to study something you truly enjoy, go for it

lol My brother, two of my first cousins, and uncle have engineering degrees, and my nephew is pursuing his now. I'm sure there's more if I include second/third cousins and other extended members of the fam. At uni, a large portion of the Somalis guys that did attend actually did engineering degrees as well. Nah, I'm not confusing it, Psychiatrists have to do an MBBS program and then specialize from there. Whereas Psychologists require a Bachelor of Science, one years honors and one year of internship. At least that is how it is in Australia. They can make about 66K-75K depending on experience and what not. Not a bad field.
