"For years, no one countered the hegemony of Miss World and Miss Universe pageants," said Eka Shanty, founder of the World Muslimah Foundation, the organization that holds the contest. "Now people are beginning to see that World Muslimah can be an Islamic alternative to Miss World."

Contestants were selected based on three general criteria: They must be smart, pious and stylish.

Aspiring contestants sent their applications online, including an essay and a video showing their Koran reading proficiency. They must also be wearers of the hijab, or Islamic head covering, in daily life. Judges then selected 100 applicants for the semi-final and picked 20 contestants for the final round.

At a resort with a large mosque featuring a blue dome and minarets in the West Java district of Subang, the finalists underwent grueling religious and social activities for four days. They woke up at 3 A.M. to perform morning prayers, had lunch with orphans, and attended classes in Islamic finance, parenting and the Koran.

Interesting, is it a bad thing? A lot of muslim girls watch beauty defined by Westerners with their Bikini competitions, gowns, etc on Miss Universe and Miss World.

defeats the whole purpose of hijab, instead of being modest and shy they are competing in beauty and aesthetics, quite shameful and really a tradition of the disbelievers.

It was narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “Whoever imitates a certain people becomes one of them.” [Ahmad] [Abu Daawood] [Ibn Hibbaan: Saheeh] Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “The chain of narrators of this Hadeeth is good.” [Iqtidhaa’ As-Siraat Al-Mustaqeem] Al-Haafith Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “Abu Daawood narrated this Hadeeth through a good chain of narrators.” [Fat-h Al-Baari]

It seems like a great Muslim alternative, although whether it is entirely Islamic can be questioned. There is something feel-good about it though.

Jax, you might not know it but you and the organizers of this might have the same goal but two different approaches to it.

Ina, it is one muslim alternative, but we are still stuck on whether we should have alternatives or not, and not what is the best mulim alternative.

Instead of hosting, Indonesia should've just donated the money to the orphans. A lot more ajar  There's an annual Qu'ran competition but I never heard of a girl's competition. That would be better alternative.

There will always be someone who will have a problem with any competition that surrounds Muslim women.

If they were to have a woman's Qur'an recitation competition, then some men will say their voice is awrah.

Every competition is useless, even the quran ones, 1,000 people died in iraq as of september and we are busy trying to reward people for reciting the quran in a melodious manner?
