KeyBlade and Perfect Order
Dune is a racist novel. I don't understand how both of you can read it multiple times, watch the SciFi series and not feel insulted. It has all the hallmarks of Orientalist-colonialist, Victorian era literature. A novel form of Kipling's The White Man’s Burden. An off-worlder who is meant to embody European aesthetics, culture and philosophy, comes to save the natives, who are brown/Arabian/African/Muslim, take your pick. You could even hear the call to prayers in the televised series. The good, noble Europeans save the dirty desert dwellers from the bad, greedy Europeans. Hey, guys? Not all white people are bad... How insulting. Besides the white Mahdi coming and helping these blue eyed freaks, he has to become like them, in a Lawrence of Arabia kind of way. It was a difficult read and totally disgusting. I don't think I have read anything that blatantly racist for a very long times. How Perfect-Order and Keyblade praise this novel boggles the mind.

Re: KeyBlade and Perfect Order
It's still a good story imo
I mean, yeah all that you said is true, but you are leaving out the other half. Which is that Paul Atriedes escapes the pit falls of his old society, and finds refuge in a new people. He brings the best of his world, mentat ability, fighting techniques, and finds new bonds and strengths within these new people, leaving Paul Atraides, and becoming Muadh'dib, marrying into the local people. He fulfills the full potential of these "backward" people, by uniting them and conquering the "civilized" world.
I wouldn't be surprised if the writer was inspired by Lawrence of Arabia, and the Arab expansion with the advent of Islam. So he comes with an orientalist point of view, but that was just the environment he grew up, but it didn't really bother me.

I see. I thought you didn't get all that ridiculous bigotry. If you still liked it... More power to you, I suppose. It doesn't matter if he married into them or whatever. The fact of the matter is that some European came, civilised savages and united them.

It's possible to read and enjoy a novel without cosigning the political themes. Perfect Order is however an obnoxious coon and it has nothing to do with his literary tastes.
