Inside Nature's Giants: Sperm Whale

Post by Navy9 »

I have seen this documentary many times, and each time I am just amazed. I love how the crew presented it, just amazing.

It's believed the Hippos and Whales are distant cousins. In the documentary, the scientists mentioned that the whale has three stomachs, wow. Ever since I read about the story of prophet Yunus when he was in the whale's stomach, I have dreamt one day to see a live whale.

Anyhow, this documentary is about the sperm whale, did I mention it is amazing.

Enjoy...

Al-Quran Al-Karim, 21:87

And remember Zun-nun, when he departed in wrath: He imagined that We had no power over him! But he cried through the deptHs of darkness, "There is no god but thou: glory to thee: I was indeed wrong!"

Prophet Yunus's dua inside the whale:

لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

la ilaha illa anta subhanaka inneekuntu mina aththalimeen

"There is no god but thou: glory to thee: I was indeed wrong!"

Please watch the documentary, it is quite interesting. They are trying to dissect the whale. I hope you do have a stomach to watch it. I watched all their online documentaries of the series, but couldn't bring myself to watch the race horse episode. I love horses so it was quite painful for me to see it. I know I missed a lot of info, though.

The Sperm whale gets its name from the spermaceti organ which fills most of its huge head. In the 18th and 19th centuries, New England whalers sought out the Sperm whale for the valuable spermaceti oil, which makes an exceptionally fine lubricant. Nobody is absolutely sure what the spermaceti organ actually does for the whale, but there are two prevalent theories. One suggests that the organ is a buoyancy control device. The waxy oil within the organ has a melting point of between 25-35 degrees C (77-95 degrees Fahrenheit). By controlling blood flow to the organ (and therefore its temperature), the whale might be able to control whether the wax is liquid or solid. If the wax is solid, it contracts and becomes more dense, making the whale sink better. When melted again, the wax expands, making the whale less dense. This technique could be a way of assisting the whale with diving and ascending. The other theory suggests that the organ is used to focus and control the beam of sound that the whale uses for echolocation. For all we know, both theories could be right.

Navy the documentary is not available for UK viewers. But it's just as interesting reading about them. Didn't realise whales ate sharks.

You can't, that is annoying. :x

I have seen killer sharks eating whales and dolphins in a way that made me so angry. But haven't seen vice versa. I mean I haven't seen whale eating a shark.

Killer sharks are so smart that they can hunt off the beach in a way I couldn't believe my own eyes, I was amazed.

 Navy, calm down walaal. U seem too excited for your own good. U r practically having an orgasm over a "Sperm" Whale. :? Anyway, i couldn't but help every time i read the word 'whale' in your thread-- thinking gee, Talooow does this excitement have something to do with her obesity? Meaning, the correlation of the word 'whale' and obesity! :-O

But then, again, i refrain myself and slap myself on the wrist. U love it because of its religious implication or mention. In that case, Mashalaah, perhaps i need to go watch it! :?

Horta why do people pick sides? You know dolphins eat small fish, if a shark wants to eat a dolphin, bon appetit monsieur requin. What pisses me off though is when they torture the animal they're eating. Like I once watched a video of a prey of lions eating a buffalo alive, I wanted to shoot them all in the head. Animal on animal crime.

Jasmine

I think what is MORE amazing is how Allaah swt has created a superior animal in every category of animals, whether be reptiles, amphibians, or mammals. (Humans are mammals u know) There is always a superior specie compared to the rest. For example -- Shark is the superior of the sea-- and with that comes with the highest intelligence. Intelligent to hunt, intelligence to survive or evade danger. Just by their eyes, u can tell, they are better than their counter parts amphibians. The lion is given the superior hierarchy in the cats world. And, here comes the punch: When it comes to Humans-- The White race has the crown. :?

Normally, lions kill the prey before they eat it, but there are times someone of them do not do so. If the prey was a huge like an elephant, I understand it is hard to take it down but other instances when it is quite clear they can kill it and chose not to, I wonder why they do so.

Having said that, have you seen how hyenas and wild dogs kill? :x
