Arming the Somali national army..
The Allies knows the only way out is to arm the army.. EU WHO have paid 1.2bil dollars to somalia, have something lose bc there plan is to re-gain that thru oil, the same with turkey and The US.. so them arming the somali national army is the only way out today.. Amisom leaders were out not long ago saying we can not fight al-shabaab literally. they don't have morale or the somali never get tired attitude..
I was just checking out Kenya's armed forces.. its save to say the kenyans are weak and not armed well..
they have 76 of vickers mbt its a British 1964 tank.. but they have good air-force.
Amisom are well armed with strong T-72 russian tanks, and ethiopia have 500+ of those tanks..
what somalia needs is T-72 russian tanks 200+ atleast
Russian air force jets + helicopters they can even buy them on the Black market
nyala light armored cars.. and amisom carriers are also good.
thats all you need plus some other small arms like anti-tanks, air defence missils etc etc...

Re: Arming the Somali national army..
Nicolas kay and the rest of the crew wants to hold elections in 2016 all over the country..
“It is very difficult to say,” says Kay. “The plan is that by 2016 the Somalis will make a significant contribution to the security necessary to hold elections that year, and after that there will be a progressive reduction in the need for the Amisom forces.”
Mohamud is also loath to predict how long this will take. “Building an army is a long-term challenge,” he says. “At the moment we are just trying to address the current needs of Somalia and achieve the capacity we require right now. We are making progress. There is a long way to go yet but it is moving.”

Re: Arming the Somali national army..
building an army does not that all these years you can build an effective army that can eliminate alshabab and do the job Amisom is doing right now in 1 year.
you dont need much equipment as well, all you need are ak's assault rifles, mortars, rpg-7s recoiless guns 105mm preferably , and some light artillary. lost of trucks and technicals.
all can be bought locally, and are available in the market, you can ship them in after buying them on the open world market and it will cost very little.
Next you need to train them, 1 year is more than enough when they reacquire only a 2 months basic training.
for more experienced units you can turn them into elite units with further training like fire and movement and fire support.
next you need an effective intelligence operation to conduct counter intelligence on alshabab, this is the main part and is more important than all the equipment you buy. Alshabab has more intelligence than all the players in somalia, they know about everything, an officer or government official shits and they will know what he ate in hours.
but the most important of all i save for the last.
pay the f-king soldiers you corrupt bastards,
nobody will fight if they dont get paid, it shows they have no respect for the troops and the troops will have no respect for the government..
its no wonder government soldiers sell allot of their ammunition and weapons to alshabab.
we know this lesson very well in somaliland, if somalilands army doesnt get payed for more than 2 months they will riot, set up ibaaros all over and start robbing banks, markets and kidnapping important officials for ransom..
this is why they get payed on time, and they even got a pay rise recently.

Gurey,
You hit the nail on the head. If these crooks set aside 30% of their revenues for the military, they could get an effective, professional force who would kill their qabiil troublemakers for a fee.
