This reminds me of a feature on some show (probably Nature of Things) about endurance running which lead into a bit about persistence hunting. That's when a hunter or two would run their prey into exhaustion, since four legged runners have to pause in order to breathe properly, whereas bipedal hunters (us) don't.
Realizing that human body has adapted specifically for running long distances and doing so while barefoot is pretty amazing.
I was also introduce to the Canadian Death Race: 125 kilometer foot race through the Canadian rocky mountains. Wow.
I think what really happened was when the cheetah or Leopard had hunted down it's prey the somalis attacked it. Cheetahs can't run for some thirty mins after sprinting at full speed, the animals were too tired. No way a Somali or human could catch them any other way
