Directed to Somali Canadians. City comparison

Post by SimplySerene »

Salam,

My family and I are spread across Canada. We trying to pick a city move to and be together in future.

Right now Toronto and Vancouver sound the most appealing.

Are you guys all living your ideal Canadian City? IF not

Is there a city you would prefer to settle and stay in the future?

What are the reasons for living in that ideal city?

Thanks in advance

There are no jobs (of worth) in Toronto, and I'm sure it's very much the same in Vancouver. Still, I would love to visit BC. Always had a thing for Vancouver. Easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

I've been strongly considering leaving Toronto for employment and education, but things have gotten muddled recently. There are monetary incentives to move to Saskatchewan, better pay in Alberta, and rumour is quality of life in those provinces as well as BC is better than it is here. Saskatoon, Calgary, and Vancouver are at the top of my list. I've even considered Halifax briefly, but it seems out east the number of jobs are far less than the rest of the country and the rate of pay doesn't really make any sense.

Personally, reasons for moving have always been as stated. I don't know if I could stay away from family and friends permanently, which makes long-term incentive programs like what you'll find in Saskatchewan irrelevant. Though housing in Toronto is unstable, so who knows. On the other hand, you don't want to regret the decisions you haven't made.

Yeah people complain about not finding work in Vancouver and Toronto. I am leaning towards Vancouver. I think it would really help one family member out. I have lived in BC for long time but the current city I live lacks a lot. Finding a place that has family, work, community and landscape beauty would be awesome. BC is awesome for camping, hiking, biking etc Definitely want those things in my life especially since I grew up with it.

I have experience with Alberta. Calgary is awesome for finding work but I find it dreary. I don’t want to go back there. Visited edmonton . it is drearier and colder. BC gets a plus for beauty. Edmonton and Calgary get a plus for the people and work. But I think I could a build connection and community with the people in Vancouver

Never been to Toronto. Pros are muslims community, multicultural , lots of relatives etc I thought my Toronto pro list would be longer. Interesting

I agree Vancouver sounds ideal...plus you have Seattle right below and can visit anytime. Their winters are much milder and I hear they have a lot of hot springs 8-)
Im currently in Edmonton...its cold and lonely here...its work and more work...ppl socializing would be soccer, sisha and clubbing, i do none of the above so im extremely bored. :(
Toronto lost its appeal 2 years ago...Ottawa is dry employment wise...If Somalia gets better, I may move there somewhat permanently.

Vancouver is too expensive even for white people. And there's no jobs there for non Asians. That place is run by Chinese ppl and they only hire their kind. Toronto is more of a place you go to to open a business

I would stick to Alberta if I were you til you save $250K. They are begging for workers and I heard there will be 800,000 unfillerdnew jobs just in the oil industry alone just in Alberta by 2025. Security Guards there make $4-5 a month. Welders are making $15K a month. Engineers are having their condos paid for in full as part of their employment package. The unskilled and skilled are eating good. Alberta money doesn't discriminate. I applaud the Somalis for running there. I'll be moving to Edmonton soon in two years. Calgary looks a billion times nicer though but Edmonton is where the fun and Somalis are

I know a Somali guy making $6K doing pipefitting. 21 days straight, 9 days off. Free accommodation and food for that 3 weeks. Another security guard making similar pay and hired on the spot despite the fact he had no security license

I'm also thinking about moving to Alberta after undergrad. Not only are jobs plentiful, but research grant money is also thrown away like its nothing over there. Calgary looks like a really nice city but Edmonton has the better university and a lot more Muslims it seems. Not sure if I can handle the cold though.

I think you should be careful when it comes to the Alberta hype. Yes, you can make tons of money relatively quickly, but getting hired isn't as easy as the rumours go. Do your research before getting on a plane. Too many folks come back empty handed lol. When I was considering paramedics, I looked into Alberta; ~$1000/day for an ACP on the fields. That is insane. Not shittin you.

SimplySerene,

You're welcome, but if I were you I'd stay in BC for the reasons you've listed. Doesn't make much sense to leave. Though I guess it depends on family. If having a "muslim community" is a pro, then yes, Toronto is the place to be. Honestly, there is no sense of community here. And it seems like the price of everything is going up daily. Well, best of luck and keep us updated on any changes.
