Lost Somalis across East Africa

Post by AbdiJohnson »

Anyone aware of this?

Believe it or not, there are Somalis originally from Somaliland of the Harti and Isaaq who live in Western Kenya and first settled there 3 or 4 generations ago during the British empire era. They have adopted and are integrated into the society.

There are also the Ajuran who fled to Tanzania and southern Kenya after the fall of the Ajuran empire and have fully integrated into the Bantu tribes there

Some of the Garre in NFD have adopted the Oromo as a consequence of the Oromo expansion

And lastly the Ogaden, Karanle/Gugundhabe Hawiye, Dir and Isaaq in Western Somalia who now consider themselves as Oromo

You are correct. A significant number of Somalis were forced to flee down south during the Oromo expansion and they were absorbed into the peoples of East Africa South of the Somali peninsula.

I met a Garre man in Carabta last year. He looked 100% Somali but spoke Arabic only, when i asked him if he was Somali or not he said i'm not Somali i'm from Chad but my tribe are called Garra (he didn't pronounce it as Garreh)...i asked him if he was aware that Garre was a tribe in Somalia he said he knows it very well. His family were residing in Chad for only upto 200 years when they drifted away from Mandheera.

I met a Chadian diplomat who hails from the same tribe as the president of the country. He said their tribe was originally Dir. He could have passed for a Somali but can't say the same about his president

Marques, Thats very interesting, seems like Somalis have been around. 200 yrs is amazing. Will ask around thx.

Chaos, Sijuis aren't just Kenyan. They are well off and very educated compared to their native counterparts. Tanzania and Zambia are good examples.
Hussein M. Adam aka Hussein Tanzania is one of the brightest scholars living today. Our PM is also a Sijui.

About 1 year and half ago I met a guy in central London from Gambia. I was going to say salam but I wasnt quite sure if he was one us. He then stop to give me salam. After we exchanged our Islamic and brotherly greetings I asked where he was from. He told me he was a Fulani by tribe but was from Gambia. To my surprise he told me Somali brought Islam to Gambia. I also know about the Garreh in Chad. There is so much we dont know about Somali history and where our forefathers went and maybe what we have discovered. Its time we did something about this and had a look back on our history.

Chad is believable because xussien habre the deposed president of chad came to somalia in the 80's and proclaimed his garre ancestry and met with garre elders.
This is well known..
i wonder how many other clans got lost on the way to chad, sudan is a big place and you can dissapear in there.
i heard about strange and tiny somali speaking oromo tribe that live near addis abbaba.

Gurey-

They are Marehan and no lie I wrote about this before. They live in Nazareth and a small goup in Gondor. Probably as "firxad" during Ahmed Gurey defeat. Also a Gurage guy told me and Sadeboi there are elders in the Gurage Silte group who claim Somali Marehan origins.
