How were you introduced and educated about tribe?
Salam,
How were you introduced and educated about tribe?
I think I was about 14 or 15 years old and my dad sat me down and explained that Somalis have tribes. he drew a diagram and wrote down all the names I carry. I kept that paper thinking okay. It was discussed once and that was it. I never memorized all the names but think I still have that paper somewhere.
What about the rest of you? How was it introduced to you?
How many of you will you explain it to your kids?
I think I will hand them a paper with the names when them seem mature enough. Simple enough

Relatives. When I was a kid, they would visit and one of them would occasionally ask me my abtirsi jokingly and they would smile and make lame jokes about the fact that I knew nothing. Around the ages of 14/15, when they asked for my abtirsi and I responded with the usual blank face, I started to notice a few genuine frowns among them

Re: How were you introduced and educated about tribe?
Ab tiris up to 10 generations or so my eedo taught me as a kid. I learnt the connection between that and qabiil at age 15 (kinda blew my mind that if I'd kept going I would get to an actual qabiil with other people who also claim it
2yrs ago I decided to find out about hawiye ab tiris and cayr sub clans in particular. Any other qabiil I now know I've learnt through SNet

my family never taught me about other clans, I learned about other clans on this site since I have been here. As for my own clan, an aunt of mine made my mom tell me about my clan at the age of 15, that same day, hesitantly my mom told me what clan I belonged to as well as my abitiris. I am an adult now, and I cannot tell you for the life of me what my full abitiris is.

Re: How were you introduced and educated about tribe?
When i went to Hargaysa 2008 i was staying at my uncles yard. At the beginning, the locals were super friendly i was having a great time until one day, during my vacation one of the locals saw my passport drop out my pocket. He asked me if he could see my picture passport i said "sure why not". As he was skimming through the pages he saw what stated my place of birth 'Kismayo' he looked at me and said "Are you faaqash?" at that time i did not know what faqash meant. He then said he would have me arrested i replied "what for?"... he said "because you're a faqash". I snatched my British passport off him and i went back to my uncles yard.
The next day the locals started to act hostile they began to make threatening gestures towards me, also i had serious food poisoning an ambiguous message from the local restaurants that meant either they were hopping i would die from it or they were taunting me to leave Hargaysa. I told my uncle about the incident he told me these people hate non-isaacs and then we sat down and he explained qabil to me.
Long story short the way i was introduced to qabil was through hatred and hostility from the isaaclanders.
