Living in government housing, driving around an old hoopty, skinny malnourished offspring looking like famine victims

I was always under the impression that they get by reasonably with the incomes made at weddings, independence parties, gobol celebrations, etc.

Or do these people get paid in khat and shah?

I think the only one who does well is Hassan Adan Samatar. He drives a Range Rover and pops Hennessey

The ones in the west shouldn't even call themselves artists. They're outshined by the ones back home, who live in 3rd world countries, anyday of the week.

How much are they paid on average?

I attended a family wedding where a supposedly famous Somali artist was paid $5000 to perform. If that same artist performed at ten weddings a year, that would be a decent 50k annually.

Most artists are on balwad (khat, women, alcohol, etc); they can't afford to save any. Afterall, the money they make isn't blessed.
