Catalan independentist association Reagrupament submitted back in April an ICE requesting the European Commission to create a procedure for the internal enlargement of the EU of which we already spoke about here. In reponse to this the European Commission replied that the way to handle this situation would have to be found within the rules of international law.

Again last week European Commission President José Manuel Durao Barroso replied, in response to eurodeputy Mara Bizzotto query on whether Catalan citizens would lose their European citizenship status should Catalonia declare independence (CA), that “the solution would have to be found within the frame of international law”.

This means that the EU will not create a special process for the internal enlargement and, according to international law, states resulting from a secession process will automatically inherit the treaties that the from the state they are seceding from. Amongst them the membership to the European Union.

It also is good news because for the first time a European Institution has openly discussed about Catalonia’s independence.

Catalonia's president has called on European Union prime ministers for support as the region seeks a vote on independence in November this year,

UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon stated in a press conference that "All the issues between the countries and among the countries should be resolved through peaceful means, through dialogue, respecting the genuine aspirations of the people concerned."[42]

This decade is the decade of european stealth secessionists. Scotland, Messilona,Basque Country, Flanders, Corsica, Bavaria, Greenland etc...

I support all of them except Greenland. I dont see a reason why few thousand ice fishing communities should seek independence for a such rich large land and sea territory from Denmark..... something very fishy about greenland independence

because its in human nature to be the lord in your own house a question of self-respect. The people of Greenland is only claiming their own land which was colonized by Denmark so the people owning the land should not have the rigth but instead be ruled by white colonists and from Europe? :? the Greenland people is not going to ask anybody of approval for their own country.

Greenland has been part of the Scandinavian realm for several centuries over 2 million square km and has a population around the 50.000 mark...vast unexplored yet rich territory that is claimed by several nations and courted by other dodgy countries..

For some unexplained reason Denmark is being pressured to let Greenland go, I wonder if the Argentinian flag will ever fly over the Falklands.

you are talking like they joined a union with the white man they were colonized and forced by gunpoint just like italy did with somalia and now they are not asking for their freedoom they are demanding it. Somalia only had a 3 million population back in 1960 should we had been forced to stay with Italy ...

You have a point there but then again using an african colony that has been colonized for few decades which has been granted peaceful independence in a time when such actions were being replicated all over the globe. even better yet a somali region thats several 1000s miles away from the colonisers in order to counter argue the Danish right over Greenland...

3 million is a nation 50.000 is a colony.

Meaning irregardless of their independence they will be always a colony if not for their former master, others will seductively take that position.

My point is not human rights or economic prosperity, Denmark is not really Zimbabwe, its about the dodgy motives behind this independence considering the russian american chinese japanese canadians plus the Puntland interest in this region.
