A great artist just passed away recently and he deserves to be remembered.

Maxamed Salebaan Tubeec was born in the small town of Laaleys situated between Berbera and Burco in mid 1940's. He was among the earliest members of the group Walaalaha Hargeysa created by the father of Somali music Cabdullahi Qarshe.

I believe he'll be remembered for these classic songs and they're among my favorites.

Hooyoy la'aanta (created by Hadraawi)
This song always gets me :wow:

Last but not least, the song he sang in Hargeysa when British Somaliland got its independance on June 26, 1960. He sang the song in Mogadishu on July 1, 1960 when Somalia Italiana got its independence and two countries merged into the Somali republic.

Here's the town he was born in.

I took the pic last summer when I was driving from Hargeysa to Burco and had a stop at Laalays to have some afternoon tea.

Laalays

Surrounded by greenery and beautiful mountains with excellent weather.

Ilaaheey Naxariistii Janno Haka waraabiyo; the greatest Somali singer ever...I once saw Sangub talking about and he said "Ninka Fanaantii ugu kibirka badan buuu ahaa". What this shows is that despite the ill effects of the terrible discrimination because of his clan, he was still a proud man who never took crap from anyone. Great composers like Hadraawi and Sangub had to literally beg him to sing their songs unlike Xasan Duufle who would seek attention all the time.

I grew up listening his songs because my dad used to love him. At one point, he had like 20 or so Tubeex cassette tapes. I think my dad still has some of his cassettes from 30 to 40 years ago. But in Somali culture, there is no such thing as cultural and artistic treasure so those cassettes mean nothing. My uncle would joke about how my dad used to think that listening all other songs are xaaraan except Tubeec

I heard it this morning and thought all Somali news portals would dedicate all their front pages to this legend; only to find out most of them had one liners.

I hope they respect his last wish and don't politicize his burial. His last wish was to be buried in Berbera next to his parents and Berbera is where his mother and his father are from, which is also the town he grew up in and the town all his siblings still reside in.

Apparently Hibo Nuura among others want something else.
