Barkhad Abdi is BROKE

Post by InoCabdi »

Barkhad Abdi, whose performance as a Somali pirate in Captain Phillips earnt him a Bafta for Best Supporting Actor and a nomination for an Academy Award, is reportedly struggling to make a living despite the success of the film. According to an article by Dana Goodyear in the New Yorker (available to subscribers only), Abdi was paid $65,000 (£39,000) for his role as Abduwali Muse, the real-life pirate who captured the Maersk Alabama in 2009. $60,000 is the minimum wage for actors, as designated by the Screen Actors Guild union. The film, directed by British filmmaker Paul Greengrass, had a budget of around $55 million (£33 million) and has taken $106 million (£64 million) at the US box office alone since it was released in September 2013.

Abdi won the role, which marked his acting debut, after attending an open casting call at his local community centre in Minneapolis; he improvised the most famous line from the film ("I'm the captain now"). Since filming ended Abdi has struggled to find further acting work, although in February he was thought to be in talks over a role in The Place that Hits the Sun, the story of South African marathon runner Willie Mtolo.

Before Captain Phillips, Abdi worked as a chauffeur and selling mobile phones; he quit the latter job when Captain Phillips had its premiere. According to Goodyear, Abdi was supported during the awards season with per diem payments from Columbia Pictures, who also arranged for clothes to be loaned to the actor.
