Hargeisa and city-planning
Why is it an oxymoron? Surely there's some form of street-mapping and building regulation, lord knows there's probably a ministry for it. Some parts Mogadishu with just a few renovations by the turks already look better than Hargeisa because of city-planning.

City Planning!!!!
forget that individual buildings look disgusting, reer xamar are lucky all they have to do is look around for old buildings that survived the war and copy them.
We dont have that luxury, every reer baadiyo builds whatever he fancies, if you want a pink building go ahead, if you want polka dots why not.

hargeisa has no city planing. But as you know hargeisa is built by somali 100%, there is no turkish or anyone else for that matter building it.

Re: Hargeisa and city-planning
at least its 100% made in Somaliland.
it takes time....its the first time we ever built buildings in our history, our land has never been touched by anyone.
to start from scratch is great, yes the buildings look dull and unveven, but remember every country started of with shit building and work their way up.....go to your towns and compare thse new building built compared to those standing for 200 yrs... big difference.
so its good to let everyone build....... to experiment and test trials within time there will be huge improvements and before u know it other countries would ask you to build theirs.
its better for u to build yourself than have others doing it for u. regardless if you make it bad.

Calm down Reer Somaliland, Turkish didn't build no homes or any new residential areas. They just rebuilded some hospitals (Digfeer) and some old schools. They also reconstructed badly damaged roads.
Mogadishu has good city planning because of the former government that has collapsed. Hargeisa also had good city planning before the war. But because it expanded after the war, it lacked poor administration and city planning.
Most Somali towns that have grown after war lack city planning due to the collapse of the government. Though Puntland and Somaliland have mini governments (admins) they don't have the ability perform good. Somalia needs a strong government. Once there is a good government and law and order things will look much better.
For now I advice Somaliland and Puntland to focus on more important stuff like health, water and electricity etc.

Very well said
Hargeisa has transformed from rubble to a OK city in the space of 20 years. Don't compare it to places like London or Paris as those are hundreds of years old and have been long established. I would rather hargeisa takes its time to become a great world city then follow the models of places like Dubai, Doha etc and be built by foreigners, do you want to be always dependent on foreigners.

Somaliland is not part of your country. Forget out somaliland and focus on your country. Puntland is part of your country

Old Mogadishu (Hamar weyne, Hamar Jabab, Cabdiasis) were all built by Somalis.
The other districts were added after 1969 by the Kacaan government, most of all those residential areas were built by the Kacaan government. The Mogadishu stadium and national theatre was built by the Chinese.
The Somali parliament was built by the Kacaan.
80% of Mogadishu was built by Somalis themselves. The other 20% were done by foreigners.

Yeah, the level of building design is atrocious. Nobody's ever heard of subtlety or harmony. Xamar has very beautiful architecture, especially the white-washed coral-stone buildings. They also have pre-existing city and street layouts to copy. Hargeisa on the other hand has a chaotic every man for himself attitude. It's also the reason why there's no pavements. You would've thought pavements are easy to construct. All you really need are bricks or stone slabs and some adhesive binding agent. I am currently doing Civil and architectural engineering. One of the first things I hope to do when I go back home is open up an architectural school.gurey25 wrote:City Planning!!!!
