A teenage Twitter user’s mock terrorism threat got a bigger reaction than she bargained for on Monday when Dutch police arrested her over the online conversation with American Airlines.

User @queendemetriax_, who identified herself as a 14-year-old girl from the Netherlands, tweeted to American Airlines on Sunday: “hello my name’s Ibrahim and I’m from Afghanistan. I’m part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I’m gonna do something really big bye.” The airline responded with a threat to forward her IP address to their security and to the FBI.

It was unclear how American Airlines intended to obtain the user's information.

On Sunday evening, @queendemetriax_ fluctuated between panic mode and boasts about how the incident had boosted her Twitter follower count.

She gave varying explanations for the offending tweet – saying she was “bored,” that her account had been hacked and that she had sent the tweet accidentally – and after hours of abusive comments on Twitter, her account was suspended by Monday morning.

Rotterdam police spokeswoman Tinet De Jong told Reuters that the girl was being questioned in the company of a relative at a police station after Twitter had disclosed to them the Internet address from which she had written the message.

“We are asking her right now why she sent out these messages,” she said, adding that police had asked the airline if it wanted to press charges. “Much will depend on whether or not she’s done anything like this before,” De Jong said, saying it would be for prosecutors to decide what if any charges she should face.
