Af Somaali; coincidence, did they borrow the word or did we?

Post by BlackVelvet »

You know little words, like haa for example.

Surely we have a word for yes and even sax, someone could come along and say it comes from saxiix. So this is ridiculous. Surely we have a word for yes which is without a shadow of a doubt, ours.

I found out that apparently baati is foreign so I am (irrationally) pissed right now.

Saxiix comes from sax, it seems the Somali language has many loan words and unfortunately it was not given enough time to reach maturity. Sometime back I was watching a South Korean movie and suddenly heard the word Waraan ie the Somali word for spear, I thought that was interesting.

What does it mean for a language to reach maturity?

We know for sure that Somalis have been around for just under 1,000 years in that same region. Probably longer. We must have had a way of saying Yes. Did we lose our language along the way?

Somali has many loanwords from other Afro-Asiatic languages like Arabic. It also has some borrowed vocabulary terms from Farsi, Italian and English.

There were already Somali words for a lot of these items/things (except of course modern inventions like television). Through trade and interaction, these old terms just gradually gave way to new words from other languages.

Haa is yes in Somali.
Sax is arabic

I always thought wayyo was interesting because of it's similarity to why.

In the 4th grade I went to a 2 week camp at native american reservation, I remember that particular southern California tribe had so much similar words to us including "Haa" for yes (which I remember having a convo about).

I have never used the word "sax". I always use "haa" or "waa runtaa". Anyway these are all examples linguistic coincidences. Like the japanese "anata" and arabic "anta".
