Learning Somali
I've decided its best to move back home to contribute to the development of our lands but there is a problem: I can't speak a full sentence in Somali.
How many years will it take to become fluent?

Johnson, you'll learn fairly quickly. One trip to Africa was all it took for me to be able to talk smoothly... hadda odayaasha ayaa lasheekaysan karaa
P.S. If I were you and in Somalia, I'd randomly shout Allahu Akbar and Sala laahu calaa Mohamed in the crowd just to be safe....in order to ward of any suspicions that might have been brought about by a lapse in pretense. Hate to see you hanged buddy

Re: Learning Somali
I come from a very big qabiil, I wont be hanged.
Ive been back home a few times. The first time when I was young, I was actually capable of speaking well in just a month. Second and third time when I got older, my head got tired of all the nodding.
You can only nod for so long. They will start to lose patience after 60 days
I am aiming for January 2017 if I'm still alive. It should be long enough

Re: Learning Somali
I would wager that you understand at least a lot more than you can convey so not long.
What I would like to know is if anybody here understands Somali gabay? If so, how they went about learning that?

Re: Learning Somali
I don't think Somalia is a good place to learn Somali because half the time they'll make comments about why you can't speak it and the other half they may try to mock you about being westernised. Ask your family/relatives to address you only in Somali and then help you reply back to them in Somali but you must do this constantly, even if you stutter and find it difficult. A few months of that will be enough. I can speak Somali fluently but I couldn't read it fluently (very well but not fluently) until I came to snet and forced myself to read the news (which was of interest to me) and now I can read that fluently too. So you have to burden yourself with the task I would suggest.

Re: Learning Somali
speaking to relatives on the phone is the best way to learn Somali.
also if u go don't be shy to communicate with ppl, yes they're gonna laugh and make fun out of u but then u have a reason as to why u don't know it.
if u communicate with ppl trust me within a month you'll see huge improvements...and you'll come back to Canada with impressive Somali....not to mention you'll lose it by 3-4 months.. and the usual phrases like pepsi ayaa drinkaraynaya, would take its place.
even Somali channels don't help....most ppl on Somali tv speak Somali English mix to impress the viewers.. its no use.
and btw once ur there non of this homo/ western style nonsense.......
or else they'll take u to the nearest mental health facility where you'd be chained up.

Re: Learning Somali
Begin to speak with your family only in Somali. Do not use English. Listen to Somali BBC/VOA. Read Somali news articles. most important is using Somali as much as you can. At least learn enough to be able to talk and understand. it doesnt have to be perfect. you can then mold your Somali in Somalia/Somaliland/Kenya/Ethiopia/Djibouti whatever floats your boat

Re: Learning Somali
It's not like you are an absolute beginner. You should be able to be fluent in under a year assuming you socialise with the locals.
