How was it easy for Somalis to become Muslim?
Somalis in nature are unruly people, they deeply dislike being ruled and dictated to. But Islam is one of the most dictating religion ever. How was it easy for Somalis to follow Islam? Islam is a controlling religion lets be honest, it dictates nearly everything in our life, from the type of food to avoid to the ways of combing our hair.
How on earth did such unruly people accept Islam so easily?

Perhaps Somalis used to be Muslim i.e. monotheist even before the last messenger (pbuh)
We are close enough to the middle east and even then who says there weren't prophets sent to Somalis previously?

True, but I would expect Somalis to be the least practising even if they followed a religion. But also I find it amazing that before Islam reached Somalia, our fellow neighbours were following Christianity. How come Somalis didn't convert to Christianity like the Ethiopians before Islam came to existence?Jasmine6 wrote:Perhaps Somalis used to be Muslim i.e. monotheist even before the last messenger (pbuh)

Re: How was it easy for Somalis to become Muslim?
Very good question.
Arabs simply had first contact with Somalis first. Somalis respect light skin people which is why they acccepted Islam. If the colonalists came to Somalia before the Arabs, Somalis would have accepted Christianity. It was all by chance. Even with Islam, most Somalis loved the Christian colonialists. Somalis never rebelled against the colonialists because they occupied them but because the colonialists freed slaves in southern Somalia. In the north, the British were respected by all clans. The Mad Mullah only gave fear into Somalis which is why some Somalis joined him but no Somali loved the Mad Mullah like they loved the British. If the Mad Mullah wasn't a ruthless man, not 1 Somali would join him
Look in Mogadishu or Hargeisa or Djibouti or Kismayo. Observe how Somalis get so excited when they see a British, Arab, Chinese, Peruvian, or any light skin came out of the airport. They want to cater to him. Now look at those cities when a Kenyan or a Nigerian or a Oromo comes out of that airport. They will be called adoon even if he is Muslim
Somalis respect light skin. Somalis are only unruly among themselves, not infront of a light skin person. The most peaceful time in Somali lands were during colonization and when Arab came with kitaab

Somalis are very unruly people and are the most least careless ethnic groups towards foreigners. Even the white colonials found the Somalis to be arrogant and above themselves from even the white colonials.
Though there are some Somalis whom were very submissive to the white colonials majority of Somalis were not.
So no, I do not think Somalis worship 'light-skin' and that is not the reason why they became Muslims. There must be another reason behind it.

Re: How was it easy for Somalis to become Muslim?
No no that is bullshit. Somalis were only arrogant to whites if they felt undermined by other clans who were receiving colonialist assistance. Some clans were getting more attention from the colonialists than other clans. Those other clans will act arrogant afterwards and act jealous. But a Somali with no conflict with the colonialist will respect him dearly. Look at the Mad Mullah's men. The Mad Mullah had much less men than the British. And the British was no where near as ruthless as the Mad Mullah. Even the Mad Mullah's ruthlessness couldn't attract as much men as the British. The white skin attracted Somalis to accept colonial rule. Most Somalis were in love with the white skin and did not feel intimidated by the ruthlessness of the Mad Mullah
99% of Somalis would chose the Italians and British before the Mad Mullah if the Mad Mullah wasnt ruthless. The 1% is his sub clan support
Somalis are only unruly among themselves. Did one Somali moryaan attack the Turks in Xamar? Not Al Shabab, they are religious group. I am talking about a typical thug. The answer is no. Not one moryaan will attack the Turk or any foreigner. I saw a 1991 picture of white journalists taking pictures when a slaughter was going on in Somalia. Everyone left the city from the crazy moryaans but white journalists were taking pictures of the ruins. The white journalists were untouched by the moryaan. The moryaan were their guides

Re: How was it easy for Somalis to become Muslim?
I will show you just 1 clear evidence that Somalis love the light skin man. Somalis threw out their entire abtisi for that of an Arab. Most Somali clans claim Arab forefathers despite genetic testing proving otherwise. This shows the Somali love of the light skinned
Most Somalis lie and say they are half Yemeni. Most Somalis lie and claim their grandfather was born in Rome or Sheffield. Most Somalis want white people to know the difference between a Somali and a Bantu. Somalis don't want the white man to be confused. Somalis seek respect from the light skinned as they give it to them. Did you see Somalis who go on Yahoo! Answers and White supremacist sites to get some sort of approval from them. "We have straight hair, our noses are small, we have Mederterrian origins".

Re: How was it easy for Somalis to become Muslim?
Abdi Johnson that is clearly not true.
(1) Monothesism was practiced in the Horn prior to Isam.
(2) Somalis are not the type to acquiesce to anyone. Tell me why the Arabs had to travel to Zanibar for prisoners of war.
(3) I concur with author that created the post, Somalis are unruly and too quarrelsome to take rule from others.
(4) Speak for your self and your experience as an *uncle tom* but the most anti-Colonialists were namely Dir in the South, Samaroon in Djibouti and North West Somalia and Northern Darood of North Eastern Somalila. I can't speak for other Somalis as I'm unfamiliar with their history.
(5) Stop consulting confused Somalis with no sense of self about their history and heritage, that want to be anything other than Somali. I have no respect for them. I have also yet to meet someone from my clan that pretends to have descended from a foreigner.

Re: How was it easy for Somalis to become Muslim?
It wasn't easy. The fact that our enemies the Ethiopians were Christian helped spread Islam as a favorable alternative yet not all Somalis converted from Waaqism and were dispersed into Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. The most classical example are the Rer-Dinle, the High Priest Clan of Waaq.
