what will it take to change the face of this forum?
This forum claims to be the largest online somali community
yet walaahi I hide my monitor from fellow colleagues when I am using it in the hospital for fear they will read the garbage our youth are regurgitating on this forum.
Blanket tribalism, racism, and general lack of respect. the same shit that old men with diabetes argue about in coffee shops.
Today the internet has become the mains source of information, yet there is general apathy and tolerance of tribalism, racism, and hateful comments that fill up
Take the pledge to dissociate yourself from topics that involve tribal bashing, wolf pack mentality of "supporting your tribe", and other bulshitt.
Take the pledge to be an Individual, see things through your own lens, and feel free to state what you believe instead of assuming you have some obligation to defend some phantom institutions(aka tribe).
respond with #I pledge if you support this.

Re: what will it take to change the face of this forum?
I think the ”General” forum which I often visit has improved. We should acknowledge that Somalis have diverse opinion on everything.
As you rightly identified, the problem is tribalism. Please do a quick research and you would note that the “tribalists” of Somalinet are also those who give the impression that they are good Muslims.
It is mindboggling to read their tribal rants of hatred and murder towards other somalis in the regional and political sections and “Ilaahey ka cabso”, “Islam this” and “islam that” in the general section.
Hypocrisy is the word.

Walaal when the prophet (saw) was talking about trbalism, he compared to dung beetle, however I am not just talking about tribalism but also blanketed racism, chide remarks against other Africans that seem to be repeated countless times.JaalleMarx wrote:I think the ”General” forum which I often visit has improved. Re: what will it take to change the face of this forum?
There are growing number of forumers who shun the idea that as a somali site mocking islam should not be tolerated. But instead it seem that doing the opposite is welcomed and even encouraged so that one doesn't come across as been "uptight" and seen as a "qof macquul ah oo open minded ah".
All the decent muslim brothers and sisters have left this sewer of, liberal wanna be, moderate muslims, and those embarrassed to say or point out the fact that Somalis are Muslims and therefore will not stand for the likes of GAALOL mocking Islam with every stroke of the key.

Tallo; brother, I have a sincere question. I have seen/heard how somalis invoke Islam as a defensive mechanism when confronted with the ills of tribalism; Is the "tribalism" that is mentioned in islam the somali kind of tribalism? Isn't it the case that the "tribe" in the Quran is "Somali" and not the social constructions we call tribes?Talo alle udaa wrote:Walaal when the prophet (saw) was talking about trbalism, he compared to dung beetle, however I am not just talking about tribalism but also blanketed racism, chide remarks against other Africans that seem to be repeated countless times.JaalleMarx wrote:I think the ”General” forum which I often visit has improved. Who mocked islam saaxib? Report it because it is against the rules of the site.Kukri wrote:There are growing number of forumers who shun the idea that as a somali site mocking islam should not be tolerated. You and I know that there are somalis who are atheists, christians and members of other religions; tolerance is the key. As a muslim, you should tolerate them.
BTW, it is your "muslim brothers and sisters" who are the tribalists and calling for the death of fellow muslims; go and read the regional and political sections.

Sxb there is an Aaya that talks about how Allah (swt) made us into nations and tribes to recognize one another (hence the diversity) , and the the Aayah ends by saying, the best amongst you are the most righteous in the sight of Allah.JaalleMarx wrote:Tallo; brother, I have a sincere question. Pride is something the nabi (scw) preached against, the same arrogance and pride displayed by Somalis. You will see running debates about what tribe lost what land or war, which tribe x was humiliated or colonized, etc.
Re: what will it take to change the face of this forum?
I do agree that tolerance is the key and as Muslims that should be our motto.JaalleMarx wrote:Who mocked islam saaxib? Report it because it is against the rules of the site.

I also agree that the level of tribalism in this site is sickening to say the least, and once members are on a clanish drive then their is no stopping them and no amount of pleading will make a difference.
I try to avoid the regional/political sections because its a zoo.
Personally i find mocking Islam more offensive than anything else.
gar iyo gardaro bah i believe that should be a priority and the mods (the Muslim ones) should step up their game.

Saaxib, there are alot that claim that members mock islam but they do not report it. Report it and I assure you that it will be dealt with. The problem is that there are some members who claim that xx, y and z are mocking islam when they disagree with the viewpoint of another forumer. Disagreement is not the same as mocking. Questioning religion (islam or not) is not mocking it.Kukri wrote:I do agree that tolerance is the key and as Muslims that should be our motto.JaalleMarx wrote:Who mocked islam saaxib? Re: what will it take to change the face of this forum?
Tallo, I have read the verse on "nations" and "tribes" and that is my point; the "tribes" in my opinion is not the socially constructed somali tribes.
Somalis love quotating from the Quran to make their points even if it is the wrong context; you'd meet a somali who wants other somalis killed and when you confront him, he will say that he is only following Allah's words i.e. the tribe is recognised in the Quran.
Again, check the political and regional sections; it is those who claim that islam is under fire from atheists, gaalos etc that promote the killings and murders of other somali muslims.

Re: what will it take to change the face of this forum?
For all my years in this site i have never reported anyone until recently when i got banned for no reason.JaalleMarx wrote:

I guess i was expecting that the mods are on top of everything and beside when its not something you use to (reporting) others it became a habit and instead just attack the person and leave it at that.
But from now on i'll report any person that so much as sneeze in an unholy fashion.

There is a balance; moderators are not opinion police. Mocking is not the same as "sneezing in an unholy fashion".Kukri wrote:For all my years in this site i have never reported anyone until recently when i got banned for no reason.JaalleMarx wrote:

The rules and regulations are in the sticky thread above.
Use arguments to counter arguments. Meet words with words without resoorting to foul language and name calling.
P.s. you have used racial slurs against non-somalis (e.g. Obama and Mandela); is that what a good muslim will do? Just a thought.
