how often do you ask a somali person their qabil?

Post by herndonhomer »

When i first meet someone, i do usually ask when the conversation is comfortable enough to ask. What i've noticed is that usually darood people will give you the straight up honest answer. Hawiye people will be reluctant and most likely not tell you. and isaaq people will always be upfront about it too. interesting to understand how the different qabils respond :)

I really don't ask someone their qabiil as usually it's unimportant. If they ask me I tell them. I really couldn't careless but I've noticed ciyaal suuqa talk about qabiil a lot, usually dissing each other something most of the educated guys don't or religious for that matter. Personally I never talk qabil outside of here or with family.

Never. When I find out that somebody is from my qabiil or my reer abti, I do celebrate that fact a bit..I won't lie, but I honestly don't go out of my way to ever ask a person for their qabiil.

Dude, if he was young like you say, theres a chance that I would criticize him for the silliness but if he was an elder...I would give his opiate and recite the full abtirsi lol

When the relationship gets comfortable, when you known the person for a while. I ask what city or region they are from

I will only ask if i know which families and people they hang out with. like for example if we have mutual friends or they're with someone i know their family. And i only ask if i know they're gonna be close to me to some degree. so we can bond and what not lol

:o And besides! What is WRONG with u all? U don't need to ask someone directly. Before you talk to someone, u need to at least have 3 sources where u can get 411 info about the person. People like warabaha astonish me. Kulaaha-- wait till I get comfortable with the person. R u fcuking kidding me??? That could take days, weeks, or months. Information like qabil is very important. I always call someone who knows someone. Sometimes I find out right there. I corner the people the person hangs out with and ask them right out. :eat:

Lol I'll never forget when a Somali man helped me and my dad at Dubai International Airport. My dad then asked in an friendly but agressive tone "Waryaa qolomaad tahay?". And the guy was like a deer caught in the Headlights lol. His expression was a mixture of awkward smile/wtf.

I never have. I think culturally most people in the south of Somalia don't. Probably because of the higher population and qabiil diversity so if you have to ask you almost never are the same qabiil. That said people still "know" largely through family ties.
