I would point you to ijtihad but I fear you may think it's 'one of those liberal things' and reject it solely based on the fact that I'm the one who suggested it. You are free to investigate on your own accord. We have to tip-toe around you in case you reject aspects of Islam because of your elementary mind. This is what happens when hetero normative cultural convictions are presented and packaged as Islam. If there's something not in your favour in Islam, you and those like you will reject it because, your hetero normative culture dictates you can.
