Do we still need dowries?
What was the purpose of dowries given to women? Are we monetizing the worth of women? Is it meant for security for the women? Or is an outdated practice? Women are you worth, 2k, 5k, 10k dollars or an apple? Does a man have a right to ask more from you if he pays more for what is suppose to be a lifetime commitment? What about men? Often times it's not paid. Men, is it just another expense on top of a burgeoning marriage markey?

I just want to take her home. 2k, 5k, 10k, it don't matter.
White men buy diamonds, and we are complaining about 2k.
Last year I found out that a Xawaadle girl's dowry is 16 ceesaan. That's when I swore off X girls.
joke.

I suppose if a girl really loved a guy and knew he was struggling e.g a student she wouldn't demand mahr.

It is a religious obligation in which the girl decides what or how much she wants. If it wasn't a religious obligation then I wouldn't give her anything, other than gifts and my love.
PO,
The better question would be sooriyo, this is not a religious obligation but a Somali cultural one. In which the grooms gives camels or money to his future wife's father/parents. Would I pay sooriyo? Yes

Sooriyo/yaraad is the one that makes me uncomfortable. It's so wrong and needs to be scrapped.

Re: Do we still need dowries?
Nah, I think its good cultural practise. It's a way to thank a girl's parents but also to show appreciation and also makes the man more capable and masculine. Besides no Somali guy will get rejected for not providing sooriyo even those Reer Miyi people, it is rare for a guy to be refused a girl just because he cannot afford to pay sooriyo. Unlike other people that practise this same culture, like the Indians a guy can get refused.Cherine wrote:Sooriyo/yaraad is the one that makes me uncomfortable.
